Women Equal Representation in Modern Day China: Marriage and Family Across all cultures, women face barriers that cause them to have unequal representation in the society. In modern day China, women are dealing with the repercussions from thousands of years in a society dominated by men. Women in China have been fighting for equal representation in aspects such as education, work, marriage, and family. This leaves us wondering, how are women, in modern day china equally represented in the society, specifically in marriage and family life? To begin, arranged marriage was a very common tradition throughout China. For example, a young girl named Li Na was born to a family with a very low income. When her father died of tuberculosis, her mother thought the best way to provide for the family was to marry her 7 year old daughter, Li Na, off to a wealthy family. Arranged marriages were very common throughout Chinese culture. This was really the start of women’s unequal representation in marriage and family life. In China’s past, over 95 percent of marriages were arranged and on a monetary basis (cite). Now, women have the right to self-determination in marriage and 74 percent of young couples make the decision to wed or do so after consulting their parents (cite).
