Women in the Contemporary Church
The status of women within the Catholic Church is often deemed a controversial topic. In particular, the position of females in the contemporary Roman Catholic Church is an interesting notion to consider. By considering the roles of women today in the Roman Catholic Church, this essay will analyse the trends and difficulties regarding women and describe the necessary steps to take to advance steps to equality. Furthermore, official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church will be referenced. Upon concluding this essay, it will be obvious that the challenge in the contemporary Roman Catholic Church is to reclaim a rightful status for women by recognising their value as equal members of their community.

This is why it is important that the Church is for gender equality because of the many things women contribute to in the Church.
Although these women have many roles in the church, women have had many different obstacles which they have faced from the beginning of Christianity. These obstacles seem to have certain trends in each generation. In Genesis’ Creation story it states God’s intention for men and women; this story also states "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (NIV, Genesis 2:18) This could be interpreted that women are the helper to men and are inferior to a male. Although, the word “helper” does not mean being lower or secondary to someone else; the same Hebrew word, `ezer, translated as "helper," is used to describe God, Himself in many different biblical stories. Another obstacle women are facing today is the fact that they cannot be ordained; it has nothing to do that they may not be worthy to be ordained but Christ established the sacrament stating "Only a baptized man validly receives sacred ordination."(catholicism.about.com) The Lord Jesus chose men and no Pope, council, or bishop can change that. In 1988, the Council for Biblic¬al Manhood and Womanhood published the Danvers Statement, affirming that "In the church, redemption in Christ gives men and women an equal share in the blessings of salvation; nevertheless, some governing and teaching roles within the church are restricted to men." I am hesitant to single out one organization for focused argument, but this statement accurately represents a sentiment within the faith that I find disturbing. In this paper, I will use the redemptive trend hermeneutic to deconstruct the CBMW's affirmation, while providing my own views on why I find both women in ministry and the redemptive trend hermeneutic as valid.

As early as the beginning of the Christian Church women had some important but very defined roles within the church. There were roles women could not play, of course, but that does not mean they did not have value to the Christian movement. Unfortunately, there have also been a lot of things overlooked that have been done by women, especially in the New Testament. There have also been arguments that the Christian Church is a "man's church" because men wrote the books of the bible and women did not have much say, apparently, in what happened during that time and how it was recorded. Even though not everyone was certain of the way women were treated in Christianity and whether they were accepted and applauded the way they should have and could have been, there were still many mentions of women doing great things. Scholars have begun to look into what women did during Old Testament and New Testament times, in an effort to have a better understanding of Christianity and the role women played in it in the past.

I do not know if I will be able to give her the correct advice, but I will share with her what I know. The accepted role of women in the church has been a highly debated argument for centuries. Acceptable roles have changed quite a few times, usually with the denomination. Even the Scriptures can lead to different interpretations that cause the debate to continue. The debates include women being elders or deacons, and whether or not they can be ordained and hold leadership positions in the church.

Religion is powerful in that it controls followers’ behaviours and beliefs throughout their entire lives; it is a form of social control. Catholicism is one of the most widely known religions influencing more than 2 billion people around the world (Ross). Within Catholicism not everyone are seen as equals; men have greater privilege than women. As the cultural pressure to remove gender-specific limitations builds, many of those aforementioned have turned to scripture for answers. Seldom are women’s roles in the Old Testament characterized by decision making or personal merits. Rather, a woman’s capacity to produce an heir for their husband complements his dominance and responsible faithfulness and allows God’s plan to be fulfilled through their combined efforts. In the New Testament, through the transformative power of Christ, prominent women became less of an anomaly, but were still held to a different set of standards and expectations than men and were usually still praised according to their actions and their faith. Although there are many instances of women fulfilling God’s plans and proving their worth among the community of Christians, the biblically normative role of women is to avoid authoritative church leadership positions and remain submissive in situations of teaching and interpreting the Word.

The Bible is controversial on the matter of gender equality. There are numerous contradictions about the status of women in Christian society. Historically, the most prominent interpretation has been rather negative toward women. The Christian Church, with principally male authority, emphasizes the idea that women are inferior to man. They focus on Eve’s sin leading to a punishment that “her husband will have authority over her.” (Drury, 34)
For most of us, faith development is a process. We grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God. As a Christian woman I know that my consciousness about the feminist agenda has evolved in stages also.
