We live in a society where men and women are not see the same nor are treated equally. Gender inequalities have always been an issue in our society. Women have always gain less respect than men based on their sex. The society has developed certain images and roles for males and females. Men are seen to have masculine traits such stability, independence, and confidence; whereas, women have more feminine traits such as nurturing, affection, and patience. As well, the society has developed the division of occupations for genders. Females are expected to work in caring professions such as: a nurse, sectary, or teacher. While men are expected to be: doctors, lawyers, and construction workers. These stereotypes of gender should not state what a woman can do. A woman should have the same opportunities as men when is come to issues such as paying rate and job positions. This paper will address gender inequalities that women face in their occupations.

Women have always been fighting for their rights for voting, the right to have an abortion, equal pay as men, being able to joined the armed forces just to name a few. The most notable women’s rights movement was headed in Seneca Falls, New York. The movement came to be known as the Seneca Falls convention and it was lead by women’s rights activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton during July 19th and 20th in 1848. Stanton created this convention in New York because of a visit from Lucretia Mott from Boston. Mott was a Quaker who was an excellent public speaker, abolitionist and social reformer. Although it was not seen as a right before, equality has grown into the statement for all of the natural human rights. Throughout the growth of the United States, much has changed: technology has advanced, wars have come and passed, old ways have been updated. However, the one thing that has followed slowly behind in the race for change is the equality for all. Those who were once viewed as lesser to the American males—females—are still having to make strides towards equality, but are considerably closer due to their fight for freedom and recognition. The documents “Now We Can Begin” by Crystal Eastman and “What’s Become of Rosie the Riveter?” by Frieda S. Miller are examples of what some of the women were out there fighting for.

Can you imagine being sold to someone that consistently beats you every day and also makes you sell your body for money that you don’t even get too keep. In “Half the Sky”, the author Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn gives the readers a glimpse of the oppression of women worldwide. “Half the Sky” is one of the most important books I have ever read. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. The first three pages I read already had me in tears. What makes this book so outstanding to me was reading and learning about all these different women and girls that has suffered in a way I didn’t think people were doing. Some of the stories were dealt with sex trafficking, maternal death, attacks on women, and not sending girls to school because of income. But the moving portrayals of the survivors improve the issues. Many of these survivors are healthy and doing very well. I never thought most of these stories that was in the book was going on in the world.

Yet the only difference about a movement for gender equality is that it is not only a domestic threat, but a global one. This makes the task at hand much more daunting. It’s easy to write an essay about a book that expressed the injustices done unto women around the world. It’s easy to inspire a teacher with fancy words for a good grade. But to really spark a change, to really affect someone is not as easy.

The United States of America is one of the most powerful developed countries in the world, with a strong economic and political stand in the international stage. Unfortunately, from all of the shine, there are spots of rust. The United States faces internal issues, such as education, foreign relations, and most importantly social policies. Recently, the United States has started to discuss more about how women in the labor market, are receiving a lower amount of payment, compared to men. This not only includes regular jobs, but high paying jobs as well, for example CEO’s. In this paper, I would like to discuss about how the International Labour Organization (ILO) discussed on the issues of women’s rights in the labor force and how they should be treated, and see if this is applicable to the United States based on the recommendation of the ILO.

Even as far back as the United States independence, women did not possess any civil rights. According to Janda, this view is also known as protectionism, the notion that women mush be sheltered from life's harsh realities. Protectionism carried on throughout the general populations view for many decades until the 1920's when the women's movement started. Women finally received the right to vote in the Nineteenth Amendment. The traditional views of protectionism, however, remained in people's minds until the 1970's (Janda et al, 2000: 538-539).

The book “half the sky” opened my eyes to many women issues that occur around the world. Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn did a great job in making a series of essays and anecdotes that work together, to create two different types of arguments. Even though I enjoyed reading this book there where two stories that stood out to me. The first one is Rescuing Girls is the Easy Par, in this part the author talks about sexual enslavement in countries in Asia. Sexual enslavement is the exploitation of women and children, within national or across international borders, for the purposes of forced sex work. The author had a plan to set some girls free by going to a brothel and buying their rights. The first part of this plan was easy because all they had to do

In the late nineteenth century, woman was seen as a sign of weakness and seek for equality. Some of their jobs include teaching, secretary, and cooking. The most noticeable situation that occurs is that women were never given the opportunity to voice their opinion on what kind of job that they should do. In addition, voting at this point of time for women was quite impractical. The wartime was a difficult time for women who wanted to capitalize on an opportunity. They wanted a job to prove to men that they are much stronger. However, there was hope when the U.S. woman’s rights movement began. A woman by the name of Elizabeth Cady Stanton started the movement at Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. Elizabeth stated that, “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” proclaimed the Declaration of Sentiments that the delegates produced, “that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” In James Roark book, The American Promise, Stanton and fellow activist, Susan B. Anthony, launched the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. This group was created to raise awareness to women who desire to vote. Have you ever wondered why women have the rights that they have today and not have to be the way women were supposed to be before? The beginning of all changes started in 1848 and lasted not just till 1920 but even until today. Many leaders such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steimem and Sojourner Truth at the time were supported by both men and women to encourage women to conquer sexism and claim their rights. The whole purpose of the movement is to gain equality for all women. In 1972, Judy Brady wrote an essay “Why I Want a Wife” to reach out to all her readers that men want perfect wives to do everything for them. This essay by Judy Brady motivated the Women’s Rights Movement.

In recent times, it has become much more common and socially acceptable for parents to raise their children in gender neutral ways. As queer rights, feminist movements, and gender equality take on a greater social relevance, many caregivers no longer expect their children to behave stereotypically “masculine” or “feminine;” children may even be praised for going beyond their gendered expectations (e.g., boys who can cook well or girls who are fit and athletic). Raising your kids without expecting them to conform to gender norms may allow them to develop a broad potential in many areas, rather than only allowing them to explore activities that are appropriate for their traditional gender roles. For example, if you are raising a girl, she may have the potential to become both a great mechanic and a talented dancer if you do not narrow her choices down to only those that are gender conforming. However, this choice in parenting may come with some unexpected issues and consequences -- ones that are as of yet unforeseen.

These principles shaped the “Cult of True Womanhood” an idea that women were to be seen but not heard. Women had no say when it came to politics, they couldn’t own property, they were not allowed to do many jobs, and they couldn’t even speak in front of men. They had the duty to be a mother and raise their children but even thought they had this responsibility it was the husband who had the complete control and guardianship of the children. Most ancient cultures were societies based on gender inequality, skewed towards male-dominance. Most societies are still mostly patriarchal, in fact.
