Women's Equality In The United States

Back in the 1900s there were limits on what women were able to do. The life of a wife and a mother back then was to clean, cook, and tend to the every need of the husband and/or children. There was very little say in the matter of what women could do especially in the government or community. At this point in the United States Women Suffrage was knocking on the door of Washington D.C by Susan B. Anthony in 1871 but little was really accomplished on paper until later in the 1900s around 1915 or so, (Stevenson).

Women in the mid-1800s had nearly any rights they could not vote or hold office. If women were to get married their husband got all of the property he owned all her wages if she worked the husband could hit his wife long as it did not injure her. Women held many rallies and other events to try and get equal right. The Women's Rights Movement allowed women a chance to go to college and other schooling opportunities. Finally women got the same jobs as men they got paid the same they owned all of their property and wages.

The late 1800’s in America life for woman was not as easy or fulfilling as it is for woman in America today. Women were looked at differently than man, and were treated as such. There have been many women in our past that have helped shape who we are as women today. Many groups have contributed to women’s rights as well. Women were not allowed to do a lot of things we as women are allowed to do today. Women in the late 1800’s in America were treated indifferently because: they were refused the right to vote, they were treated differently than men, and in marriage they had separate spheres than the men.

In the mid to late 1700's, the women of the United States of America had practically no rights. When they were married, the men represented the family, and the woman could not do anything without consulting the men. Women were expected to be housewives, to raise their children, and thinking of a job in a factory was a dream that was never thought impossible. But, as years passed, women such as Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Elizabeth Blackwell began to question why they were at home all day raising the children, and why they did not have jobs like the men. As Many years of fighting our country was formed to be a great and powerful nation. As the colonies wanted to break away from the British Empire, it was still being run like a business. You can’t have a production without workers so as this nation was form and wars were to be paid off it took the settlers a lot of hard work and taxes to pay off debt. But can the workforce really be equal if the women do not do their part to strive and stay in work? She explains that although equality for women has progressed, leadership positions often lack female occupants. The United States of America is a country created on the basis of freedom, however, not all freedoms were gained at the same time. A year ago, I would have never agreed with the statement "women have not achieved equality," but since then I have encountered various people and conducted my own research that supports why I believe that women have not achieved equality. They may sometimes get unequal pay but they have the same amount of rights as man. They are equal but woman items are a little bit more expensive than men. It is a very controversial topic, women try to protect their rights about paychecks, relationships, and so much more when it comes to equality with men. With that being said, there are some novels from amazing writers that have strong opinions when it comes to feminism. Some of them think positive more than others, but there is no right or wrong answer. In this novel, The Yellow Wallpaper, is very feminist because of the way this husband, John, treats her mentally sick wife, Jane. She goes through deep depression once her baby was born. There are two things John takes from her, and that is her happiness and her freedom.

My topic is going to be about “Equal Rights for Women”. We as women feel very strongly about this topic not only for rights but how women are treated in everyday life also. We as women feel as though this topic is a great topic for me not only because I am a woman but for the simple fact we as women see the things that go on when dealing with equal rights. I have researched a lot of education websites with articles and still reading some books about women’s rights and it has been very educational that this problem has been going on for centuries.

Women have been considered unequal to men throughout most of history. Very few places in the world gave women any rights. Women were always considered the ones who would stay at home and clean, while men would hunt, work, and provide. It wasn’t until the 1900’s where women finally started fighting for their rights, which they, kind of, won.
