Women's Role In The Odyssey

Homer wrote “The Odyssey” in 800 BC and it is one of the first epic poems to depict women with a bigger role and influence. In 1920 women are granted the right to vote and in 1972 it is declared “equal justice under law” to every citizen. For women to legally be given the same rights as men it takes 2,771 years. Today women are still not treated equal and it is 3,000 years ago when females are first shown to have importance in society. In most stories written during the early Greek ages women are portrayed as weak and helpless, but in “The Odyssey”, Homer portrays his female characters with helpful and useful role when they guide Odysseus and Telemachus during their journeys, expressing the value of women.

The attributes of Odysseus are admired by Athena, and she connects to him on the level of cleverness. Odysseus exploits qualities that Athena adores, which is why she takes a liking to his well being. In the beginning of “The Odyssey” Odysseus has been away from home for almost 10 years because he is taken captive on a nymphs island. Athena doesn’t think that Odysseus deserves the punishment given to him so she confronts Zeus about letting him go. “Olympian Zeus, have you no care for him in your lofty heart?” (1.223). Athena questions Zeus, why he is not won over by sacrifices from Odysseus. Athena shows her power in asking the ruler Zeus why there is nothing being done for Odysseus.
