Abstract
Discrimination is an issue that has been debated for hundreds of years. It is a subject that is continuously researched and relentlessly looking for resolutions to amend the problems that occur. There are a myriad of types of discrimination but the main focus of this paper is on workplace discrimination and the effects affirmative action has on it.
Workplace discrimination transpires when an employee suffers from unfavorable or unfair treatment due to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other legally protected characteristic (Fevre, Grainger, and Brewer, 2011). The journal articles examined present different approaches and views concerning workplace discrimination, unethical activities in the workplace, and affirmative action effects and perceptions.
Workplace Discrimination and Ethics
An abundant number of studies have been conducted on workplace discrimination. However, a multitude of results and perceptions regarding the topic are suggested in this research. To understand how workplace discrimination, unethical treatment, and affirmative action affect those who experience it vs. those who do not experience it, all forms of discrimination should be studied. This paper examines Kravitz and Klineberg (2000) research against other workplace discrimination and affirmative action to propose more research should be conducted to better understand the how workplace discrimination affects others.

In a study that was reviewed by Deitch and her colleagues (2003), blacks were interviewed at work about whether the felt they were being discriminated. Most participants had difficulty answering because they were not sure whether discrimination was linked to their race or different factors like gender. Such inconclusive research only adds to the haziness of work related issues defined as ones of “racial discrimination” (Deitch, Barsky, Butz, Chan, Brief & Bradley).

In Professor William Shaw’s The Organization and the People In It, Shaw delves into the debate that is affirmative action. According to Shaw, “affirmative action means programs taking the race or sex of employees or job candidates into account as part of an effort to correct imbalances in employment that exist as a result of past discrimination, either in the company itself or in the larger society”(Shaw, p. 437). Affirmative action promotes the diversity of job opportunities for both genders and all races. Some of the opportunities can cause an unfair advantage to minorities when paired against equal or sometimes better-qualified white counterparts. This can become a moral issue by causing unfair advantages to some people. By attempting to level the playing field, affirmative action actually over compensates for potential discrimination and can place white males at a disadvantage. This paper will assess my personal experience with prejudice in the workplace, including the implications of the situation to the organization in terms of its stakeholders, reputation, and its legal responsibilities. Furthermore, I will analyze the negative effects the discriminatory behavior had on morale and functioning of coworkers and employees. Lastly, I will recommend three action steps that I would have taken as a manager to avoid the situation, in addition to three steps to render the situation.
