Imagine not being able to reach into your refrigerator and pull out a snack. Think about those mornings when you forget to eat breakfast and your stomach is growling the whole morning. Now imagine not being able to suppress that feeling. Imagine feeling that hunger day after day. This is reality for almost a sixth of the world’s population. Is there any good news? Yes there is. There are many ways for us to reduce world hunger. This essay will look at the causes of world hunger as well as short-term, and long-term, solutions. World hunger can be solved using a combination of ideas and people working together.
In the first world there are 9 million people suffering from hunger. In Canada, the HungerCount survey, organized by

Food may also be used as a weapon in war. Soldiers may starve their enemies by ruining their food supplies in order to weaken them.
In Sierra Leone there are sufficient wood and marine resources, a large diamond industry, other mineral industries and agriculture. Unfortunately though, they went through a violent civil war from 1991 to 2002 which ruined the country's economy. Now, they were ranked the third lowest country on the latest UN Human Development Index and 84th out of 88 countries on the Global Hunger Index.
Even without any big disasters and wars, which are out of most peoples’ control, there is still poverty. Many people are stuck in what is called a poverty trap. They may not have the basic supplies to start or work their business. For example, farmers may not be able to buy seeds. Without being able to get started, they can't grow anything and therefore go hungry. Even once they get started though, farming conditions are often inefficient and many crops go bad. Many agricultural businesses don't have the organization or the right materials to get the most and the best crops out of their harvest. Often their plants die if there isn’t enough rain because they don’t have good irrigation systems. Even once they manage to harvest their crops, often they don’t have good storage. Many of them don’t have good transportation, so selling their crops in another village is extremely difficult. This lack of agricultural
More than 1 billion people in the world right now are suffering from hunger. Food security is “the access by all people at all times to the food needed for a healthy life,” as defined by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. There are four points to food security, which are “availability, access, utilization, and stability.” When one or even all these points are missing, it is described as food insecurity. The rise of food prices in 2008 shocked and affected millions of people, many of whom were very poor. Because of the rise of food prices, there were protests and hunger was put at the top of the list, although it did not stay there. Science has to understand how to deal with hunger as the problem grows. Using scientific research and changing policies can have a huge impact on the issue of hunger. Population is
We are calling a world-wide war for the hungry in every country to win food, but you won’t be able to get the food until the end of the war and no one is left. The people from every country must get well acquainted with their new friends that will help them win the delicious food. This war will cause many friendships to be broken between counties and alliances with new counties. While this war is going on, the hungry will forget about the food and strive on killing their enemies. This will allow many others to feast off of the dead people during the war. Devastation for food would fill the air killing people who are fighting in the war without being wounded. Killing men, women, and children by the minute due to starvation and finally killing everyone. This proposal would end all World Hunger.
The location and geography of the country has caused the people to experience famine after famine, leaving many to die from starvation. A famine is in definition, “A great shortage or an extreme scarcity of food over an extended period of time” (Webster). There are several different types of famine that occur in different types of the world. The type that Ethiopia generally goes through is called a Ravallion. During a Ravallion famine, there are unusually large amounts of causalities with extreme shortages of food in certain parts of the population. There are many things that cause famine, whether it’s draught, plague, or civil disrupt. Right now, Ethiopia is experiencing a draught that has killed almost all of their crops. Because of the famines that Ethiopia experiences most every year, there is usually an increase in the amount of people malnourished. This year, 11to 14 million people are expected to go hungry leaving many to starve to death. Ethiopia has experienced many draughts like these, the worst however, being in 1983. This draught lasted two years and the draught alone killed over 400,000 people in one year, this doesn’t include the deaths that were due to starvation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983%E2%80%931985_famine_in_Ethiopia).
World hunger is a very serious issue in today’s world, that is very stunning in a world full of resources and food to feed the hungry. World hunger affects millions around the world. There are 795 million malnutritioned people around the world today. The good news is that hunger is a problem that can be solved. There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Today’s knowledge, and willing people can just be enough to solve the main issue of world hunger.
“Hunger”, by Lan Samantha Chang, is a cautionary tale of an immigrant Chinese family in this complex story about unrelenting hunger, oppression, love and loss. Narrated by Min; the deeply unhappy and obedient wife of Tian, a gifted violinist, finds work as a music teacher in New York, but ultimately fails to land a permanent job at the school. Driven by personal failure and his unrelenting hunger for the violin Tian cruelly forces his two daughters, Anna and Ruth to play the violin, so they can follow in his footsteps. Tian’s inability to separate himself from his violin ends up destroying his family. Chang uses Tian’s obsessive hunger for the violin as a symbol of his identity, showing us that we must be careful

For this paper, I would like to discuss the hunger issues we have in the United States. Nearly 18 million households in the US remain “food insecure” (Tanner, 2013). Being food insecure is when some does not know when or how they are going to receive their next meal. Children are not receiving the necessary nutrition they need to be able to grow and develop properly and many people in the US are becoming obese because of the unhealthy food that is available for people at such a low price. As of July of 2015, 45,480,644 people received benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition
Throughout the history of mankind the human race has faced the devastation of famines. Canada recognizes the need for the international community to stop famines from becoming a recurring theme. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Reference Table (the standard used by the UN), famine occurs when three of the following conditions occur: 20 percent of the population has fewer than 2,100 kilocalories of food a day, 30 percent of children are acutely malnourished, two deaths per 10,000 people, or four deaths per 10,000 children per day, pandemic illness, access to less than four liters of water per day, large-scale displacement, civil
The reality of hunger is one that is often suppressed and denied around the world. One huge misconception is that everyone who is hungry does not have a job. People argue that hunger is the fault of the person who cannot afford food. If they were really hungry, then they would have done something about it right? Surely, they aren’t actually hungry otherwise, they would have gotten a real job. Sadly, the victims of food insecurity not only have to face the challenges of hunger but also have to listen to the biting criticism of other citizens. Just as Quindlen said, the first step to ending hunger is recognizing
This web page's goal is to introduce the visitor to the problem of world hunger and provide ways to access more information through books and other web sites. The page was created as a final project for an Environmental History class held at the University of Vermont spring semester 2000.
Food security is one of the largest problems facing our world today. To be "food secure" a country must have enough
Sierra Leone is an African country that has recently come out of a civil war that led to the country’s severe and persistent poverty issue. Although Sierra Leone is one of the few countries that is rich in some precious natural resources such as diamonds and rare minerals, this country has been continuously dealing with poverty-related issues . Based on the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Human Development Index (HDI), Sierra Leone was listed as one of the poorest countries in the world in 2006 and remains among the world’s poorest countries, ranking 180th out of 187 countries in the HDI in 2011 . The civil war caused poverty to spread throughout Sierra Leone.
From 1970 to 1997, humanity was solving the starvation problem worldwide. The amount of hungry people had dropped from 959 million to 791 million, which is a total decrease of 168 million people. This decrease is
Education is a very powerful weapon, one that isn’t available to many however if it were, we could solve many issues within the world. The biggest and most fundamental problem which can be seen globally is, world hunger. The sad reality is that this is an issue and one that not many are talking about. In his article Frederic Seebohm proclaims that the world bank estimates “that there are now one billion absolute poor in the world” (Seebohm 5). He continues to define “absolute poor” as “those whose condition of life is so degraded by disease, illiteracy, malnutrition and squalor as to deny its victims basic human necessities” (4). The fact that there are so many hungry people in the world today is mind-boggling when you think about it. We are well into the 21st century. We now have the ability to communicate instantaneously with people all over the world. The collected knowledge of humanity, is literally at our fingertips via smartphones in our hands. Now some may assume that world hunger is still a grave issue simply because there is not enough food to feed everyone. However recently scientists who have studied world hunger, have found that the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet. The main cause of worldwide hunger is poverty. As R. C. Pickett mentions the “ the world has at present 1.5 billion hectares of arable land that remains uncultivated”(31). The problem isn’t that there isn’t enough land, the issue remains with the coordination of food production. Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to buy food. They also lack the monetary resources to grow their own food, such as the means to harvest, process, and store food. The interaction of domestic animals within the cropping systems needs to be intensively revaluated. A solution that Pickett suggests includes “governments and businesses interacting to provide a favorable price and availability structure of the necessary inputs for adequate production, and to supply needed economical processing, storage, transport, and utilization systems” (32). His solution is to aim more government intervention as he believes that much more food could be produced at least in certain areas but is not, simply because there is no
Food is one of the basic needs of a human being to survive. All of us depend on food for having a good health, therefore with the lack of food many people will be starving and malnourished.
