Imagine not being able to reach into your refrigerator and pull out a snack. Think about those mornings when you forget to eat breakfast and your stomach is growling the whole morning. Now imagine not being able to suppress that feeling. Imagine feeling that hunger day after day. This is reality for almost a sixth of the world’s population. Is there any good news? Yes there is. There are many ways for us to reduce world hunger. This essay will look at the causes of world hunger as well as short-term, and long-term, solutions. World hunger can be solved using a combination of ideas and people working together.

Food may also be used as a weapon in war. Soldiers may starve their enemies by ruining their food supplies in order to weaken them.

In Sierra Leone there are sufficient wood and marine resources, a large diamond industry, other mineral industries and agriculture. Unfortunately though, they went through a violent civil war from 1991 to 2002 which ruined the country's economy. Now, they were ranked the third lowest country on the latest UN Human Development Index and 84th out of 88 countries on the Global Hunger Index.

Even without any big disasters and wars, which are out of most peoples’ control, there is still poverty. Many people are stuck in what is called a poverty trap. They may not have the basic supplies to start or work their business. For example, farmers may not be able to buy seeds. Without being able to get started, they can't grow anything and therefore go hungry. Even once they get started though, farming conditions are often inefficient and many crops go bad. Many agricultural businesses don't have the organization or the right materials to get the most and the best crops out of their harvest. Often their plants die if there isn’t enough rain because they don’t have good irrigation systems. Even once they manage to harvest their crops, often they don’t have good storage. Many of them don’t have good transportation, so selling their crops in another village is extremely difficult. This lack of agricultural
