World War II

World War II was a world wide war that involved a vast majority of countries around the world, it was fought on every ocean and the mediterranean sea, Europe, southeast Asia, China, Middle East, and Northern Africa, this war lasted from September 1, 1935 to September 2, 1945, and with a total of 50 million to 85 million fatalities in battle and 11 million fatalities in the holocaust making World War II the deadliest war in all of history. The war started on September 1, 1939 when the Nazi army invaded Poland which caused a declaration of war from France and the United Kingdom; these two countries came together to form the Allies which would later include The United States and Russia. The Japanese continued to push the Chinese forces back capturing Nanking in December 1937, after the capture of Nanking hundreds of thousands of innocent people were brutally murdered by the Japanese. The battle of the bulge which lasted from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945, is the largest and deadliest battle for U.S troops to date, with more than 80,000 American casualties all together there 19,246 killed, 62,489 wounded, and 26,612 that were either captured by opposing forces or went missing. On January 31, 1945 private Eddie Slovik was shot for desertion, he was the first American executed for the crime since the civil war. Between 1939 and 1945, the allies dropped 3.4 million tons of bombs, dropping them throughout parts of Europe and Japan. The most gruesome and terrifying part of the war was the Holocaust; the Holocaust was the mass genocide of millions of innocent Jewish people. With approximately 42,500 concentration camps located all throughout Germany and other parts of Europe, it was in these camps where victims were abused, starved, used for slave labor, and mass murdered. Jehovah’s witnesses and gypsies were also persecuted and murdered in German concentration camps. It is estimated that 1.5 million children died during the Holocaust in these camps. Despite the risk of death, thousands of people tried to helped save the Jews, by hiding them inside their homes, shipping them to safe locations, and smuggling them out of camps, some would also push food through the fences of the camps in an attempt to feed the starving people inside.
