Warfare is a grim and horrible thing. Napoleon’s wars cost hundreds of thousands of lives for example. Yet, less than one hundred years later, Europe would discover the full horror of modern war. The technology of World War I made that conflict incredibly agonizing and prolonged the conflict, costing many lives. In the end, technology also produced some startling results. World War I was fought on the Western and Eastern fronts. Germany and its allies engaged France, England, Russia, and eventually the United States. The Western Front proved to be particularly bloody as battles were seldom conclusive. The war dragged on as it turned out to be less offensive than defensive. Troops became hopelessly bogged down and commanders refused to give …show more content…
Naval warfare had not turned out to be an especially critical factor for either the Germans or the British, and there were no truly decisive naval battles. The submarine, however, produced some earth-shaking results. Submarine warfare led to the sinking of the Lusitania, a passenger ship. This occurred during a submarine blockade of Britain. The Germans placed no limit on their campaign of submarine warfare. This campaign helped draw the United States into the conflict. Without submarine warfare, perhaps the U.S. never enters the conflict. By June of 1918, the Allied lines were so devastated that the German commander Ludendorff felt he could wire the Kaiser and state that the war might end soon. Then, U.S. troops began to arrive, as many as 250,000 a month. The Allies rallied. Germany may well have won without the infusion of U.S. troops into the battle. So, in a very unexpected way, new technology-- the deadly submarine warfare of the Germans had a decided impact on the war. War is always a deadly business, but the modern warfare of World War I was particularly devastating. The invention of items such as barbed wire, flamethrowers, mortars, poison gas, and the machine gun made conventional charges impossible. Millions were lost in the face of this terrible new technology. Ironically, this new technology also helped end the war by bringing the Americans into the conflict. The impact of technology can be terrible as well as
The Western Front was the main location of war during World War 1. The outcome of the battles resulted in the formation of a battle front, which saw three years of warfare in 1915, 1916 and 1917, with only a few months of mobile warfare at the start and at the end of four years of fighting.
World War I was fought in Europe between Germany, France, Britain, Russia, The United States, and many other countries. As one of the bloodiest wars in history, there were many underlying and fundamental causes. World War I was triggered mainly by a combination of imperialism, nationalism, militarism, and alliance systems between European countries.
World War I left a lasting impression on the world. New weapons such as tanks and poison gas turned the war into a “war of attrition.” Trench warfare was primarily used in this war and the conditions there were part of the reason why millions of people died. The war remained a stalemate between the opposing sides until the United States made the decision to join the war on the side of the Allies. This changed the course of the war and the Allies beat the Central Powers. Many factors in Europe contributed to the start of the war. Later, other reasons forced America to join the war which would leave drastic results.
“Freedman breaks down the Great War into key battles and issues, covering the causes of the war, the leaders, the modern weapons and technology, and the war 's consequences. Firsthand accounts of allied and German soldiers are presented as well.”(Miller). The start of the war that every country was part of. It was the War that changed everybody 's lives. The War was an outbreak to to all of the countries. “Only when the world went to war again in the 1930s and ’40s did the earlier conflict become known as the First World War. Its casualty totals were unprecedented, soaring into the millions. World War I is known for the extensive system of trenches from which men of both
New technologies of World War I impacted soldiers fighting on the front lines in many ways. These new technologies were very deadly compared to the older weapons and they were also bigger and stronger. Some new technologies were rifles, chemical weapons, and improved naval warfare. Automatic rifles was one of the most important improvements of World War I because now soldiers spent a lot less time reloading and much more of their time shooting. Another new technology was brought about by Germany and it was submarine warfare. Germany went on a rampage sinking the Allied forces’ ships and neutral ships such as passenger ships. This caused the Allied forces to set up protection for supply lines which carried merchant ships with valuable cargo.
World War I was prolonged, it was one of the most brutal and disastrous war in European History. One of the areas it took place was on the Eastern front; this was between Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary. Another area that the war took place was the Western Front; this battlefield ranged from the Belgian coast which was the northern end, to the southern end which was the Swiss Frontier; this mainly was between Great Britain, America and others that lied in the East. To Germany, this battle front was known as "die Westfront", to France it was known as "Le Front Occidental", for the British force, it was "The Western Front". Communicating along with supplying front line troops was a huge problem. Technology was slowly being developed, but
“The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril” - Winston Churchill. The first submarine used in naval warfare was during the Revolutionary War. The submarine was mostly unsuccessful in taking down British ships, but showed potential for stealth attacks from under the sea. The modern submarine did not rise until the start of WWI. Germany used the submarine during WWI to dominate the Atlantic Ocean and destroy enemy cargo, troops, and warships. The German submarine was called the Unterseeboote, or U-Boat for short, and throughout the war proved to be extremely dangerous. The U-Boats blockaded the United Kingdom and was a huge threat to merchant ships and other warships. The arrival of the submarine created new complexity to warfare shifting from surface warfare (on sea and on land) to multilayered warfare (submarine and aircraft). As submarines became more sophisticated, they forced existing navies to reconsider their strategies both in relation to merchant and battleships and forced innovation on both sides.
One of the heartbreaking truths about World War 1 was that millions of innocent men needlessly died because civilian and military leaders were slow in changing their war strategies and effectively employing new technologies. Thus, the war typified a fight between an inefficient nineteenth century warfare which witnessed lot of casualties on both sides, and a twentieth century technology-driven battle in which many decisive technologies were tested. As for America, the trend of industrialism and mass production of machineries and war equipments had begun fifty years prior to the onset of the war during the American Civil War. With President Woodrow Wilson deciding to take part in the war in April 2017 towards making the world a safe place
Imagine standing in thick mud, surrounded by dirt walls. Artillery shells could be heard crashing into the ground as fellow soldiers were blown up in close proximity. Moaning from the wounded filled the air. Fear and panic were abundant as the soldiers employed methodical tasks they had learned in their training. A quick glance over the parapet showed the brutality of war, as this is the day-to-day life of a soldier in the trenches. During World War I new scientific know how allowed for the development and introduction of numerous types of weaponry for use in battle. Advancements of technology during World War I led to a higher number of casualties than what was otherwise possible. The technologies included guns, tanks, explosives, barbed wire, and poison gas.
It caused the Russian Revolutions of 1917 that made Russia communist, and led directly to World War II, Adolf Hitler's "war of revenge". The Cold War continued the sequence, fought covertly between the capitalist U.S. and the communist U.S.S.R. Previously isolated with World War I; the United States entered the world stage to join Britain and France in the First World War against Germany. But WWI changed the way war was fought with the revolutionary technological advancements like the advancements in guns, specifically machine guns, tanks, airplanes, etc. This paper will demonstrate the use and designs of trench warfare and how it was one of the most technological advancements in World War I and the diseases that life in the trenches would lead
The warfare mentality went from a war of mobility, to a war of attrition and that was due to the establishment of trench warfare throughout the battlefield. Trench warfare was no doubt a horrifying and awful type of warfare that caused countless non-battle deaths, yet it was necessary at the time. Without trench warfare, the war would have been a short but extremely bloody war because there was no way to combat the ferocity of the new weapons used in the war and there was no way to advance on the enemy. Attrition was the smart move because it gave both sides a chance to strategize and prepare themselves instead of rushing into battle with no plan of action. Also, the weapons that came into World War I were primarily defensive weapons, and
Erich Maria Remarque wrote of the bloody and extreme loss of life which occured in the trenches of one of the deadliest wars of all time. The increase of deaths in this new war was mostly due to the great technological advances in weapons allowing soldiers to kill each other more efficiently than ever. It was reported that approximately 10 million soldiers were killed during world war 1, six million deaths from the allied powers and four millions deaths on the side of the axis powers. The most impactul weapons which were developed during world war 1 were poison gas, machine guns and tanks.
Beginning in 1914, World War I (WWI) was the catalyst of modern warfare. A conflict fought among the great western powers, which proved to be uncontrollable in its consequences, and completely incalculable in its aftermath. Stealing the lives of nine million soldiers and six million civilians. Damaging the lives of countless
World War I led to a massive amount of lives lost. This was the first war where 20th century weaponry technology was used in the early 19th century. World War I resulted in the death of an estimated 8.5 million soldiers to include 126,000 US troops, 1.7 million Germans, 1.7 million Russians and 1.3 million French. Not only was this the first War that used high powered weaponry, World War I saw the introduction of poison gas, and tanks. The introduction on gas had an effect on World War II as the Nazis used Zyklon B, in the concentration camps.
American army officer Omar Bradley once said,“If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.” The meaning of this quote lies in the destruction and devastation of humanity and geography during war. If we do not stop advancing in ways of killing and causing suffering, we will soon face the consequences of these technologies. Throughout World War I and World War II, there was a ginormous technological boom in which countries were competing to invent new weapons or vehicles used in warfare. Specifically, World War I could be blamed for the start of the creating of new technologies used in warfare even today. These technologies were often invented or created during World War I,
