Compassion International is a NGO that works to “release children from poverty in Jesus’ name”. They explain their mission as follows:

“In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.” (http://www.compassion.com/mission-statement.htm)

They focus their work on behalf of the human rights of children and explain poverty using the “hub-and-spoke” analogy as to the causes of poverty, including human rights violations. Often from prenatal care right up to the support and development of “qualified young adults” the group provides the means to feed, protect, and develop the well-being of a child via Child Sponsorship through many volunteers across the world, to personal and individualized support of growing children according to their age, gender, culture, and more.

Through Compassion International’s sponsorship program, there have been many benefits to children worldwide. A study conducted in 2008 found in regards to education, on average 50-80% of child sponsors were more likely to graduate from college, 14-18% were more likely to attain a salaried employment, and 30-75% were more likely to become community leaders.
The lack of clean water has been a regular challenge to Compassion International. According to their website, “2.4 billion people do not have adequate sanitation facilities” and “748 million people do not have access to clean water” (https://magazine.compassion.com/water-2/) They strive to improve these conditions by educating children how to identify and avoid playing in dirty water.
