In chapter five we learn about how several authors when writing on a topic chooses sides and how they argue their position against others. The author writes for a purpose as well as an audience. The purpose of the author choosing sides is to allow readers to alter the way they view the issue; maybe in a better or worse way or even the same. Sometimes the reading also helps those who lack knowledge on the issue settle on a side, in addition, those who have yet to decide on a side. In order for the author to capture a reader's attention, they need to establish the issue from the beginning in the title and the first few paragraphs or sentences of the paper. Using questions, statistics, quotes, or anything that may capture the reader's attention …show more content…
Everybody can believe what they want to believe, but the reason for you to believe in that thing comes from somewhere and is not always the same as somebody else. The way the author explicates his/her motive will guide people to agree or disagree with them, and in the argumentative paper, you can determine what side the author has chosen by looking at the thesis and supportive paragraphs. Using logos, ethos, and pathos an author can have better chances of convincing the audience to their benefit, by providing persuasive reasons, convincing them that what they are writing is credible making the author trustable, and by connecting the reader to the writing in a sentimental way. Stating the counterclaim of the other side of the argument gives the readers the impression of an open minded author and makes them feel like they are not being forced to believe on just the author’s side. Additionally the author is guaranteed on using the opposing sides counterclaim whenever they have a weak outlook on the argument to make themselves look more precise in their writing. The author can also him/herself accept the other side’s views, but at the end of the day they state their side clearer and more effectively supported. In an argumentative paper the author will make the writing simple to follow by providing the reader with transitional words and indications. The author will use these concepts to help demonstrate to the reader that everything they have stated in their piece is
-Some may disagree with me because banning larger drinks will just make people buy more smaller sized drinks allowing them to take in more sugar and calories.
“Do what you have to do, and send me to the main office.” “I don’t care,” said Alexander, a teenage student who I disciplined in the hallway.
We already know that there has been a precipitous decline in the study of liberal arts because many people do not value it anymore. English and history are now being pushed aside for math or science. Fareed Zakaria, an American journalist and author, in his article, “What's the Use of a Liberal Education?” writes, “Even President Obama recently urged students to keep in mind that a technical training could be more valuable than a degree in art history. Majors like English, once very popular and highly respected, are in steep decline.” This mindset is causing many people to turn away from liberal arts-based subjects, so they can pursue something that would “be more valuable”.
On 7/09/2015, at 1916 hours, I was on duty, in uniform, and driving a marked police vehicle (0913). Off. Martin and I were dispatched to the Gateway Transit Center (115 E Front Street - which is in the city limits of Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington State) on report that Jodi Schweitzer was trying to start fights with others present.
This course has taught me that an argument will be most effective when both sides are presented to the reader. It is not enough to persuade the reader to agree with the opinion of the writer by only presenting evidence that proves his/her view point. Every person will have their own personal opinions on a topic. Most of the time there is no definite answer as to whether or not they are right or wrong.
3. Analyze what you see as the major claims, evidence, and logic with which he attempts to persuade the audience.
The topic my group has chosen is technological advancements in the medical field. My first argumentative paper will address the risks of these advancements and whether the benefits outweigh the risks. My projected thesis states that the benefits of advancements in the medical field outweigh the security risks posed to the patients that use them. I will also address the counterargument by saying that although some people believe these privacy and security risks are too dangerous to accept, these advancements are improving the health and livelihood of the patients they treat. Additionally, the purpose of my paper will be to contrast the benefits and the risks of the advancements. There are numerous stakeholders involved with this topic, including
the positive side because it has more points, more ethos-based arguments, more pathos-based arguments, and has the same amount of logos-based arguments. The first point from the positive side is that Israel’s parliament has already accepted the bill banning the usage of the word “Nazi” preliminarily, which is an ethos-based argument because it involves Israel’s parliament and is logos-based because it is a fact (Rudoren 14). The second point that the positive side argues that the law will help prevent anti-Semitism from growing and normal usage of words from the Holocaust, which is a pathos-based argument because it is not a proven fact, but the point makes people want to join the positive side in order to try to prevent this from continuing due to emotions (Rudoren 14). The third argument presented by the positive side is a quote by a lawmaker named Ohayon, which is an ethos-based and pathos-based argument because it is from a credible person and is emotion-evoking (Rudoren 14). The fourth point the positive side talks about is how Nazi symbols are being prohibited by other countries already, which is an ethos-based and logos-based argument because it is based on countries’ decisions and it is a fact. The fifth and final point that the positive side introduced is what Lipman talked about, which is a pathos-based argument because it is
Sexual thoughts pop in and out of most people’s mind, but especially teenagers, and there’s nothing they can do about it. It is normal for teenage boys and girls to experience this, more than ever when they are hitting puberty. The hormones in the body begin to act up and teenagers want to experience other things on their own. Males begin to grow pubic and facial hairs, and their voice starts to deepen, while girls’ breasts begin to develop and their body begins to take shape. After hitting puberty, teenagers are now at the point where they want to experience things. ‚Don’t go out there and get pregnant‛ a mother
Though the definition of a “good paper” is subjective, there are many universal qualities that produce a strong, academic writing. Rhetoric is comprised of an issue, claim, persuasion, audience, evidence, reasoning, assumptions, and appeals. To develop an effective style of argument, Schlib and Clifford suggest marking transitions. This helps the audience understand and anticipate a turn in an argument. They also recommend creating coherence by repeating words and by using similar words. The repetition of keywords establishes the main concerns of an argument. Furthermore, the authors claim readers should balance parts of a sentence because readers enjoy the symmetry and rhythm-like quality in the work as a whole.
In the article I’m Fine with God…but I Can’t Stand Christians Who Impose Their Morality on Others, authors Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz critique the Christian faith’s self ordained position of society’s moral leaders. They write that Christians have no right to be in this position because of their low esteem within the culture, their hypocrisy, their lack of credibility and the blatant rejection by society’s new post-modern view. Bickel and Jantz begin with a discussion on society’s view of Christians, none of which are positive. They state that this is a known fact that even Christians agree with. They then begin to compare the Christians with legalistic Pharisees. In other words, just as Pharisees failed God’s commands so have

Having concluded the project, I have learned the difference between an argumentative paper and a persuasive one, as well as how to state my point clearly. Through the use of primary and secondary sources consisting of examples, firsthand accounts, and statistics, my project maintained its status of an argumentative paper instead of a persuasive one. Since I used different types of credible sources, my argument was valid because I referenced the sources. My style and message was of my own, but referencing the sources helped support my essay to ensure the paper’s trustworthiness and accuracy.
It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled.
