Yes Ma'am Short Story Have you ever thought of stealing, for something you dearly wanted, and would do anything to get it? Well Langston Hughes wrote “Yes Ma’am” about a young boy named Roger. Roger wanted blue suede shoes, but didn’t have money to buy them. He saw Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, and tried to steal her purse, but failed to do so. Hoping to shape him up, she treats him like her own son, and cares for him, though there is no one at his house to go home to.

It all began when a young boy named Roger came upon an old lady walking along the road. Her name was Ms. Jones. He decided to try run up and take her purse away from her. The weight of the purse and the boy, caused the boy to fall, and not follow through with his plan. …show more content…

At this point he wants to help Ms. Jones, “Do you need somebody to go to the store,”..... “maybe to get some milk or something?” Roger asked. He sits in the sight of Ms. Jones while she is in the kitchen, earning her trust, and giving her trust to him. He wanted to help the lady, by asking if she needed anything from the store, and having more respect for her and her support.

In the end, Jones kept Roger at her house, treating him with love and care, made him realize that stealing was wrong. Jones explains that she can relate to him, when she was younger, and that hit home with Roger. Her stories of her childhood, made Roger feel better about what he had done, and knew that he wouldn’t do it again. “‘.....take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. “ Jones said, telling him he didn’t have to steal to get things in life. Roger ran off, saying “Thank you ma’am.” They never saw each other again.
By Jones’ actions, Roger has changed his decision making, by her caring for him the way she did. Throughout the story, she helped him understand what he did was wrong, and he knows, that he shouldn’t steal again. She gave him 10$, and ran off, to buy his Blue Suede
