Yolo: The Rise of an Excuse
With the rising popularity of the anagram Yolo, how has it evolved over the years? In 1989, Touchstone Pictures released the movie The Dead Poets Society and received both critical acclaim and box office success. Following its release, Tom Schulman (writer) received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film. The Dead Poets Society extrapolated a simple idea, Carpe diem. This concept consists of the idea that life must be taken by the horns and lived to the fullest. Everyday belongs to the individual; a person only has to take advantage of it to make it worthwhile. Yolo can be beneficial when not taken advantage of or used in an ill-mannered way.

The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? Does the Dred Scott decision contradict The Declaration of Independence which states that every man is created equal?

Growing up in East Los Angeles was especially rough for a young Latino teen. The area where he grew up in was full of violence and drugs. In order to be able to live there, you have to have a strong sense of character to avoid all the temptations that the gang life can provide you with. You need to have an even stronger character to even get involved with a gang in the first place. I’m saying this because once you are in a gang there is only 3 ways out: going to jail, a hospital, or the cemetery. For young Luis, living these experiences with his homies gave him a sense of belonging. There’s nothing more self fulfilling than thinking you’re a part of something. It’s even better when all of your friends are involved as well. Getting accepted as one of the gang was great for young Luis. His initiation was to fight 5 guys and stay standing by the end. This way of initiation is mandatory for all those affiliated in it. They test your strength and loyalty to the gang when they jump you in. For

My Yiayia is a very special person to just about everyone who knows her. She loves to talk about her memories and experiences of when she was younger. During the interview I was able to hear even more wonderful stories from her past. She was in high school during the 1950s, she grew up in a small poor neighborhood with brick streets, one high school, one factory everyone would work out once they graduated highschool, and one drug/grocery store. She remembers there was a soda machine at the drugstore where people from her school went to socialize but she was never allowed to. Her parents were immigrants from Turkey making her cultural background very important in her life, she was very sheltered throughout her school years, and her family's
A mysterious and strange malady arrives in the small American town of Abida which can be found on an island off the coast of the New England region. The island is somewhat isolated, most political matters are handled locally between it's people, this is due to the islands history. The people of Abida are the final result of successful human amalgamation between slave and owner with many of which who still holds on to their eccentric ancestral beliefs that revolve around "the old ways". This causes many to rarely visit or leave the island and as a consequence Abida is flung into a realm of enigma lying beyond the fringes of the New Englander's conscience. Without the aid of the mainland however, the disease, which is referred to locally as "scourge" takes large sections of

The emergence of social media has dramatically hanged the ways in which we communicate with our friends, families and love ones. This new found way of communicating has been used to strengthen family ties and unite people across the world. Families that are far away are now using social media more than ever before to communicate with each other on a regular basis. The company I work for is using social media to promote its products and at the same time strengthening its customer base. We are not only able to text, but also able to use video and other methods. Because I work for one of America's largest telecommunication companies, we use multiple social media platforms and applications. Some of which are highly restricted
My life is clearly represented by the symbolic choices I made. Everything I drew means something important to me. The CN Tower and the running man that I drew on the bottom portion of the page are excellent examples of this. The running man represents my passion of running and desire to chase after my dreams. The CN Tower represents the city of Toronto and the place in which I was born and raised in.
