Many authors tend to state their opinion very briefly in their work. This makes it vulnerable for others to agree or disagree on the opinion with facts. Common fallacies also known as logical fallacies and argumentation styles are the most critical ways an author can be debated on leading to ongoing arguments. Logical fallacies are faults in reasoning that weaken our arguments and argumentation styles are types of arguments that modify the text to create a structured essay. Logical fallacies and argumentation styles can either create a more developed essay or can make it vulnerable. This can be avoided with much revision and editing but there will always be someone to judge someone else’s work for any purpose if found. Like many novels that
Again, I would like to rebut Gee’s claim by adding my belief that the perceived value of the person and or group applying the criticism has a lot to do with the way the criticism can be received to effect change within a discourse. This belief ties in perfectly with the next statement made by Gee, which I shall now address, as within that very same point Gee writes, ‘But what one cannot do is stand outside all discourse and criticize any one or all of them – that would be like trying to repair a jet in flight by stepping outside it.’ In my estimation, Gee’s loses his argument here when he chooses to speak in this all-encompassing term, as by crafting this sentence in such a manner he essentially paints himself into a corner. In our culture any individual or group (regardless of background, religion, education, experience, etc.,) has the right of freedom of speech and as such may freely criticize whatever another person or group
Welcome to WritePoint, the automated review system that recognizes errors most commonly made by university students in academic essays. The system embeds comments into your paper and suggests possible changes in grammar and style. Please evaluate each comment carefully to ensure that the suggested change is appropriate for your paper, but remember that your instructor's preferences for style and format prevail. You will also need to review your own citations and references since WritePoint capability in this area is limited. Thank you for using WritePoint.
1. Sentences are grammatically correct (noun/verb agreement, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.) (up to 5 points)
The second thing I will be talking about today is that, do corporations have a legal right to track your car? If you think that is a purely academic question, think again. Vigilants website notes that, “DRN fuels a nation network of more than 550 affiliates,” and it also “captures data over 50 million vehicles each month.” For example, the article gives some phrases like when Crump says, “This is the same argument that the NSA made in the face of public.” Now this is a prime example of an essay that I’m writing because the language appeals to negativity in this article. Beyond just rhetorical appeals, another style choice of the author is the use of questions they had put us to thought. Well following that, in a lawsuit against the state of Utah, Digital Recognition Network and Viligant solutions are arguing that a recent Utah law banning them from using automated cameras to collect images and locations which is a violation of their own free speech rights. By using words like "one could argue" and "this is a complicated area", the author is attempting to make the reader think harder of what the critics could argue to this point in time. This language is powerful to a certain because if you guys are critics to this argumentized essay then you would agree, if not, you would think about words like one could argue. Overall, this article
Why: In the first rhetorical analysis timed write, I struggled to identify which rhetorical strategies were used along with their connection to the theme of each article. In the sentence above, my writing successfully identifies both the purpose and theme in a concise manner.
For example is when Ms. Greenfield concluded, "Every medium develops some cognitive skills at the expense of others." She is says that our growing use of the internet had strengthened visual-spatial intelligence, which can improve our ability to do jobs that involve keeping back of lots of simultaneous signals. She refutes this statement by saying that this ability comes with weaknesses in “abstract vocabulary, mindfulness, reflection, inductive problem solving, critical thinking and imagination” (Carr, 2010). He wants his audience to know that he looked at both sides of the debate before he made his claim and that he is not being
An author’s word choice is critical for readers to understand the argument being made. Van Maren’s word choice does not support his audience. In his article, he talks as though the readers already have an idea and are educated about the specific issue he is referring to. An example of this is when he says, “It is the truth
This sentence was one of the few sentences that seemed the least formal, yet the tone of this sentence seems to be formal and professional compared to the Simonite’s article. In “The Decline of Wikipedia”, Simonite used a formal, yet informal, language that seemed to connect more to the audience. The article was an easy read which is important when trying to get information across to
The tone is questioning, and informative. The tone can mostly be summed up with this sentence “Why do they feel less welcome on Wikipedia?” I think sums up the tone because, the author is asking a question and implying that they (women) feel less welcome on Wikipedia. Tone is used effectively in this article and the tone used is the best fit for this article. This is because this article is trying educate people on a problem and inspire people to fix it. While this article is making an argument, that women don’t feel welcome on Wikipedia, it’s not trying to refute another argument.
Oftentimes it is difficult to discern the errors within your own work due to misconceptions or flaws in thinking. Within my Textual Analysis paper the main difficulty was a difference between the definition of rhetorical analysis from previous learning. In an attempt to fix it I tried to add some clarity to the meaning behind the points I made because they were unclear and not fully developed.
6) Do you think that logical arguments are a better support for a position than arguments that are based on authority or character? In other words, would you support a policy just because a celebrity or an important expert supported it?
As mentioned in the reading, the beauty of Wikipedia is how easily accessible it is, if you have a mobile device with internet connection you’re set to go. Yet, the fact that Wikipedia is so open and easy to edit often leads to critics saying that the information on these pages is unreliable and fake. However, as stated in the book, fifty percent of all examined cases of vandalism on Wikipedia are repaired within two to three minutes of being uploaded and I have yet to find anything incorrect. Due to the ease of access and the vast amount of information that is uploaded to Wikipedia, I personally think that a compromise on the changing writing style and structure is to be expected and is
Wikipedia is a very popular site that includes very reliable information. In fact, students and researchers use the site for their individual projects. Certainly, people visit the site for personal reasons too. For example, to find out more about their favorite sports team or to look up information on a city that they plan to visit. However, some educators and students got together recently. They proposed a question. "Are Wikipedia articles really that accurate." Some feel that educators and researchers have a duty or responsibility to make sure that the information supplied on the site is entirely accurate. Thus, the Wikipedia writing project was born. University students are creating and editing pages to boost the accuracy on the site.
Bias is a discernibly human quality; like all things human in nature, there lies deep in our consciousness values, axiology’s, and prejudice. These ‘biases’, rather worldviews, create within each person their own rose coloured lenses with which they perceive, and more importantly, influence the world. To look at how bias can occur both blatantly and subtly in writing, three distinct forms will be analyzed; Linguistic Biases,
