In the many stories we read, the two characters that seemed the most similar to me were General Zaroff, from The Most Dangerous Game, and the character only know as Eckles, the main character in The Sound of Thunder. These two characters are from different stories, though they do share many traits that can be compared. While one might question the morals of one more than the other, the general basis of their interests are similar at the least. As well as being similar though, again, they have some very obvious and blatant differences. For example, the game they hunt is heavily contrasted, and the means of their hunting is extremely different. With both characters, the effects they have are drastically different. Though, one could say that both characters cause a fair amount of damage each nonetheless. General Zaroff has killed numerous people, though it is not actually stated how many in the story, his allusion to his recent kills suggests that the number is relatively high. Eckles, on the other hand, kills animals. Ancient ones to be precise. In the process of killing this game though, he causes a lot more uproar than what was ever meant to happen. So, both of them do manage to cause a lot of damage in their paths. On this note, neither of them see a problem with killing. Zaroff says that, “ life is …show more content…
First off, the most blatant one is that Zaroff kills humans, while, as far as we know, Eckles does not. Also, the damage that Eckles causes in the story is rooted in an accident. All of Zaroff's ‘accidents’ were intentional, like the shipwrecks on his island. At the same time though, Eckles actions affect the entire world, shown in the quote “there was a thing to the air, a chemical taint”(Bradbury 45), which shows the subtle differences in the world, while Zaroff’s effect is more to a few individuals themselves and possibly their
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as a murderous, uncaring, and creepy. Zaroff is shown to be murderous in the story when he tells Rainsford that he kills people for fun. “I hunt the scum of the earth–sailors from tramp ships–lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels” (Connell 78). This quotes shows that Zaroff is murderous because he created his own game to kill people. During the story Zaroff is also uncaring. He shows that he is uncaring when he says it gives him pleasure to watch men die. “That is why I use them. It gives me pleasure” (Connell 70). Zaroff shows that he is uncaring during this scene because he does not care about how people he kills feel. Lastly, Zaroff is also creepy in the story.
Zaroff did this for the thrill and challenge of it, because animals were not enough of a challenge for him. Ulrich did this because he was hunting a lifelong enemy, whose family has been an enemy of Ulrich’s family for many generations. Both men aimed to kill the humans on their land, whether for fun or for a lifelong feud. Ulrich and Zaroff were hunters and the other humans were prey. Neither man feared the consequences, for they both thought they would never be caught.
Furthermore in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” General Zaroff had a strive to kill for fun. Zaroff would always kill animals, and after animals became easy, he moved onto humans. Zaroff would enjoy killing and it became
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
In the story Zaroff thinks it's not a problem if he kills the innocent people for fun. This mindset of his is openly showing signs of being a protagonist and going to do evil things throughout the story. In his conversation with Rainsford he clearly states that, "Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong,, andif needs be, taken by the strong.” He states that he should be aloud to kill just because in his mind only the strong people in the world have the will to live. When Zaroff says "Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer." Also states that he thinks that he's not a murderer he's simply a hunter. Which means in his way of thinking or the way he looks at it what he's doing is not wrong he's hunting them, trying to figure out whose strong and who is not. He decides to hunt humans because he says there the only match for him no other animal is enjoyable for him to hunt. He has the sense of superiority that humans were the only thing left. Zaroff then states “The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure.” He thinks his actions are justifiable and that that's what the weak people are here for to give the more stronger and equip people pleasure. Zaroff then says “I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” In his mind since he is a good strong hunter why should not he be able to hunt he calls this a gift and takes a lot of pride in it. This is another statement he says showing he thinks what he is doing is good, eliminating what he says “scum of the earth” so the strong are the ones to live.
Did you know that “The Most Dangerous Game” and “The Hunters In The Snow” could be similar in so many ways but have some differences in both stories? There are two main characters in “The Most Dangerous Game” and that is Rainsford and General Zaroff and in “The Hunter In The Snow” has three main characters and that is supposedly friends and that is Tub, Frank, and Kenny. In both stories there are similar times that the elements of the two stories could have similarities and differences. In both stories there are instances that involves hunting. In the stories there could be as each characters have problems with each other or individual. In the stories there are times when the author wants to get the point across and allow the readers to
The harsh truth of island life reveals that Zaroff’s idea of civilization includes personal pleasure derived from murder .Zaroff explains his “game.” Zaroff has become bored with hunting because the animals do not provide a challenge for him, so hunts the only animal that can think and reason—man (Connell 74).He believes that he deserves the challenge, so it is morally right to hunt men. This is not civilized behavior. It is murder. He tries explains why it is right. “‘If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth—[…]’”(Connell 75).Zaroff believes that his social status and wealth give him the right to kill those in lower classes. This
Before you can get to their similarities in pushing their hobbies to the limit you have to see how both characters are different. Zaroff could handle pressure very well in tough situations but on the other hand, Eckels couldn’t. Also, Zaroff was very smart he is able to track animals and humans like a bloodhound dog but Eckels isn’t the smartest on the other hand. He is very cocky and tries to make himself better than he seems. Also, General Zaroff was very brave he always looked dangerous in the eye and never backed down. But on the other hand, Eckels could not stand up to danger when he needed to he wasn’t very brave at all.
Ruthless, this may seem like a very harsh word to use to describe a fictional character but, both of these characters are very ruthless characters themselves. If you go back to the quotes you can see that both are barbaric in their actions. One kills people for fun, while another tortures people for what they believe that they deserve. They are both inconsiderate. They are inconsiderate because, they seem to only care for themselves and not for others. For one they kill people but, they both also do these things for selfish reasons. Zaroff does his murderous things in his way for his own satisfaction not for others, he barely even considers most of them human. Montresor on the other hand murders people so that he can feel better about himself and as if this is what they deserve because they mocked him. Although these are two of their main faults, they still have one more obvious character trait in common.
There exists a unique relationship between the hunter and the hunted. Both subjects have their own distinct talents, however, even though it may not seem to be, are surprisingly uniform. Their connections can be difficult to discover, but after digging further into the character thoughts, feelings, and actions, they become more outward. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff have many similarities and differences throughout the length of the story.
In my opinion, I defiantly think Zaroff wins the contest of evil here, I think this because he is joyfully hunting down shipwreck victims out of entertainment. I would have a different opinion if he was doing it reluctantly but instead he doesn’t really have a problem with
Both stories, The Most Dangerous Game, and Porphyria’s Lover use characterization to convey how psycho the characters are. General Zaroff is portrayed to be delusional and crazy because of the fact that he is a murderer. At one point General Zaroff exclaims… We try to be civilized here. Zaroff says that he is
Dr. Moreau, from The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Zaroff, from “The Most Dangerous Game”, seem very different. Though they are in many different ways, they also are very much alike. In Moreau’s case, he is a messed up psychopath who was kicked out of his home country for his vile experiments and has shaped his malleable partner, Montgomery, into thinking that his experiments are completely in the ordinary. Zaroff is also a sick madman who shipwrecks people on purpose on his island. Then he tells them that they have two choices, play his sick game where victims are hunted for three days by Zaroff, or be whipped by Ivan, his deaf and dumb partner who happens to specialize in torture. These two characters are complete social outcasts who seek perfection in their sick and terrible ideas.
In great works of literature many of the same traits and characteristics appear in the main characters. Adventure books where you find Heroes and villains in a constant struggle to thwart the others efforts are where you could notice the reoccurring traits the most. Heroes are often very similar, demonstrating similar strengths and weaknesses. I compare Huckleberry Finn, to Murtagh of the Inheritance series. Although Murtagh is not the main protagonist, he is most certainly a fallen hero, in my book once a hero always a hero. As long as they are remembered for what they were and not what they are, a hero they will remain. I hope in time I will be able to lead you down the path of similarities and differences between these two amazing characters and heroes. These similarities include characters such as courage, and a desire to be what they want to be to go where they want to go.
Zaroff is a heartless proud man who sticks to his life of a murderer. His arrogance leads him to his lost at his prey. Even after the death of his loyal servant, Ivan, he wonders how he would be able to replace him. The characterization of Zaroff is a cold prideful murderer, that has a disguise of society's own image of what civilized looks like. This shows that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and everyone has their own deadly
