Zero Holidays: A Case Study

In this paper I will discuss Social Theories such as Structural Functionalism, Conflict theory; with emphasis on Karl Marx’s early work and how it relates to the conflict theory and Symbolic interaction. I intend to define and discuss relevant sociological terms of these theories and how these theories could apply to my favorite holiday which is Christmas.

YHS has undergone many changes in the past couple of school years and it's stirred up quite the controversy. The disappearance of the “Senior Table”, the giant new wall in Student Services, the various flat screen TVs positioned all around the school, the “Parking Permits”, etc… but what's been the most controversial this year has been Super Fridays. Some students don’t mind, while others have openly, and quite loudly complained.

Believe it or not, most works of fiction can be based, at least in part, on a real event. This is prominent in historical fiction, but it can even happen in works that are seemingly completely fictional. This is because writers, especially TV writers, base the stories they tell on personal experiences. This is the case with the classic TV show, Seinfeld, which had many episodes based either loosely or completely on the writer’s real experiences. Dan O’Keefe’s episode “The Strike” features the made-up holiday, Festivus, which was based on a holiday made up by his father, Daniel O’Keefe. Despite how similar Seinfeld’s Festivus is to the real Festivus, there are a few notable differences. Regardless of how similar or different the two are, is this classic episode really as good as everyone says?

the fist thing i did on Christmas break was go to my uncles house to have a new years party.we had finger foods ping pong,and lots and lots of chicken nuggets.Are family is really competitive so we went up stairs and payed q tennis challenge at first it was 2v2's then it was 1v1's the it was family vs family.if someone lost they would be really mad and throw a fit that they lost.Mos to f the people were really out of it at the party.

Christmas is the annual festival celebrating the birth of Jesus on the 25th December, at least that is what it began as initially. Since it has expanded into an international phenomenon for consumption, taking priority over our everyday practices of life (Michel De Certeau, 1980). Our time we spend divided between work and leisure in accordance to the codes and conventions of society shifts, Christmas derails these expectations. Yet surprisingly Christmas gains little attention in terms of social research, despite the fact that it can be explored diversely. The inquiry ‘What is Christmas?’ links to multiple aspects of social research. The aspects of Christmas can be subdivided into the following; religion, commercialism, gift-giving, social relationships, sensualism and mythology. This essay will analyse these fundamentals of Christmas through both psychological and sociological perspectives, as the theories among these two social sciences are best suited to the elements which make up Christmas itself.
