What are the negative effects of social media on young teens and the future generations? Elise White, the author of “Does the Media Negatively Affect Teenagers?”, explains the negative effects of media on teenagers, and she includes Sex, Violence, Money, and Body Image, as the major factors. She also says, “If a Teenager is responsible for a violent act, society is convinced that media/Video games is the main cause.” (Elise White 1). Out of all these negative factors, society believes that Body Image is the one that effects the most. An average fashion model is thinner than ninety eight percent of women. Advertisements only work to publicize their brand/products, such as; toothpastes, makeup, clothes, and so on. Young teens are exposed to such unrealistic image and are encouraged to place more importance on their appearance than a healthy life. This advertising pays for all forms of media, including movies, magazines, websites and phone applications. These advertisements lead to low self esteem and insecurity among teenagers. It can also lead to emotional and mental issues like depression if they do not achieve so called “Perfect bodies”. In today’s society, owning something that everyone has or is trending like, makeup, branded clothes, and fancy gadgets is considered to be “Cool” and socially acceptable. Violence and Sex are the other important negative factors, as teenagers are influenced by the movies and video games they watch and play. Music videos these days portray a very violent and sexual image and meaning, which impacts the way many teenagers
The average number of teens watch almost three hours of television per day, which reveals them to thousands of images of violence, sexuality, from advertisements, according to the research done by scientists, by the time today's teens reach their old age, they would have watched between seven to 10 years worth of television during the trajectory of their lives. The content and the amount of television that teens watch substitutes other activities and could have a negative influence.Brands fascinating to teens take advantage of their particular vulnerabilities, the desire to fit in, to be apprehended as attractive. Teenagers have become the main target for advertisers. Teenagers are impulsive and invariably want the latest and greatest things. Advertisers see teenagers as great gateways to persuade themselves into buying their product. Teenagers come across over 40,000 advertisements per year whether on the Internet, TV or in their schools. Ads are constantly telling teenagers to buy this, look like that, or act a certain way. There are negative sides to advertisements harnessed towards teenagers. Teens are extremely accustomed to their place in the peer ranking, and advertising acts as a kind of "super peer" in leading them toward what's cool, what's satisfactory and what’s acceptable. Many teens are highly resistant to messages around body image, and marketers use this to their advantage with their
We live in an era ruled by social media, primarily when it comes to teenagers, social media is used for everything. From communicating with family and friends to being used as a news outlet, and even advertisement for business and companies. This article is titled “Social Media: What's Not to Like,” written by Alison Pearce Stevens. The topic of this essay is the effect social media can have on teenagers. Social media, on one hand, can be used as a great way to share with the world and boost teens’ self-esteem. On the other hand, social media can be used as a place for bullying, body shaming and can cause depression or even suicide in teens.
Teenage girls are at an impressionable time in their lives. Mass Media is a key idea in one of the factors of socialization that become important to teenagers. Teenagers look to the media for a sense of entertainment. Whether it is movies, magazines, or even some aspects of social media, teenagers get a lot of influence from the media’s message. The problem with this is the media has a specific way of doing things and can be negative to a susceptible teenage girl. Media’s way of portraying a woman can be skewed and unrealistic way from what reality is. Teenage girls then have a desire for this look or way. In this essay the three ways I will describe as to why the media can negatively affect a teenage girls body image is by showing
The developments in technology have been seen through computers/laptops, cell phones, internet, television, and even newspapers. All of these forms have impacted what could be communicated. People of most ages are now able and regularly use technology and the social aspects that come along with it, i.e., Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or Facebook. All of which filter in media of body-ideal models that one must scroll past. Manovich stated that social media users have greater chances of viewing beginner and independent content that may not be spread by means of corporate or public funded media (cited in Andsager). What Manovich means is that often times as viewers we are exposed to content that someone created independently without the help or approval by the media. This often times leads to images that are very unreliable and unrealistic. But sadly these are the types of media that lends viewers to problems loving themselves. The regulation of content available on the worldwide web is not very strong but should be improved to help with situations such as these. By knowing that there is realistic and unrealistic media, it is safe to question how much it affects viewers because most would know this. Adolescents are most commonly on social media and would be a very
Beauty is the quality of undeniable attractiveness possessed by a confident individual. Beauty is culturally valued because of its effect to make someone feel confident, creative, and unique. The beauty industry is expanding faster than ever because of the constant publicity it is receiving, whether it through social media, articles, or blogs. There are stores that are dedicated solely to all things beauty. One store in particular is Ulta Beauty. It is a beauty emporium where makeup gurus, or any ordinary person, could really get creative. Ulta’s popularity continues to grow because of its fun, colorful, and persuasive ads. An example would be an ad which contains a subtle, white, sparkly background, with vivid hues of purples, pinks, golds, and blues clustered together on the right side, with the words “All things beauty. All in one place. Go ahead, lose yourself,” and the large “Ulta Beauty” logo in the center of it all. The ad uses color, text, and gender appeal to connect to the value of beauty and to persuade women of all walks of life to shop there.
Social media creates an ideal body image in an adolescent’s mind that affects them in various ways. Having an ideal body image can lower self-esteem in some adolescents’ creating eating disorders, and this idea of getting plastic surgery as they get older. Social media is steadily increasing and has heavily influenced adolescent’s to be more aware of their body figure. As a result, many adolescent’s have developed low self-esteem due to the fact that social media continues promoting fit women and creating the idea that women need to be thin to be loved or accepted by society; this can cause harm to adolescent’s because they feel the need to fit in to society.

The culture of media has now taken a large affect on young girls and their body images. Young girls are feeling dissatisfied with their bodies because of the way society views women. The media tells us what to look like, what clothes to wear, make-up, what cars to drive, and sometimes what to eat. Media is changing people constantly through advertising and by showing us the looks and fashions of celebrities. Advertising has negative effects on the formation of oneself as seen through the nature of the promotion of its’ products. This effect is particularly prevalent among young adolescent girls. Young girls feel the need to join dietary plans or result to eating disorders Advertising in society results in negative effects on girls through self-image that leads to harmful consequences. The media is the biggest factor contributing to girls’ dissatisfaction with their bodies, causing eating disorders.
The average person spends a good portion of their day on social media or watching television. Furthermore, the new era of adolescents is even further exposed than the average person. This exposure can have many positive influences in a Child’s life; open new doors to meeting new people and having straightforward access to personal wants and needs. Unfortunately, this media can very well be a tool used to manipulate the tender minds of adolescents and open doors to self-hatred along with depression. Young girls tend to generally struggle far more than boys due to the social norms and societal pressures. The media can set unrealistic or inappropriate
The book that I have read is called, “Beauty Queen” by Sarah Mlynowski. A girl named Abby and her little brother Jonah live in a small town called Smithville. Every night at 11:00 they go down into their basement into a mirror. But the thing is, is that it’s magic! This mirror brings you to fairy tales. So for the mirror to work, you have to knock three times. First, you knock once it starts to spin, then you knock twice and then it starts to turn purple, and finally you knock for the third time it starts to hiss. There is a fairy that lives in the mirror, Maryrose, that brings you into the fairy tales. The last time they went in the mirror Maryrose got scared and accidently hypnotized Jonah and earased his memory will they do?
The importance of the body image and what is considered to be the ‘ideal’ body are two of the primary factors that contribute to the negative affect of the media on the teenage society of today.
Social media has become one of the most popular sources of communication for the upcoming generation. For young people growing up in today’s society, social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have provided pictures and news that have become the first thing that their eyes see in the morning and the last thing that they see before bed. These pictures have provided unrealistic standards as to what is considered beautiful in today’s society. As young people refer to these images as a form of comparison, it has created harmful circumstances. These influences on the lives of young people have forced them to take extreme measures and in some cases, has been the cause of death. Social media in today’s society has proven to
In the play "Beauty" I believe the conflict is about two girls that want each other's lives. Carla and Bethany both have a problem which is internal conflict. They are both are jealous of each other's characteristics. Carla wishes she could be as smart as Bethany and Bethany desires to have Carla's beauty. The whole irony of the story is about two young girls who are not happy with themselves and wishes for what the other has.
After debating whether social media has a positive or negative effect on teens, it has been concluded that social media has a negative impact on the developing teenager. Social media can be a great tool at times, by being a means to communicate with friends, classmates, and family members; It can also help spread your ideas, hobbies and life experiences. But after reading the article Studies Offer Mixed Messages On Social Media’s Effects On Young People, By The Baltimore Sun, it explains how social media has a negative effect on teens by causing them to compete (to have a better social media feed), change their body to fit into society (the ideal body shape) and the way it can makes someone feel.
Social media is causing teenagers to be negatively influenced. This is an issue, because teenagers are extremely impressionable and social media is negatively impacting their lives each day whether they are conscious of this or not. One anonymous author who wrote the article, “Teen’s Use of Social Media: Positive or Negative?” states, “90 percent of teens have used social media” (Teens’ Use of Social Media). In this statement, it is clear that a large majority of teenagers have already been exposed to some type of social media. Since teenagers learn from direct observation and experience, it is a huge problem when they witness things on social media that concern sexist, racist, or homophobic content. Many teenagers even say that they have an addiction to social media. Teens who have had bad experiences online or who do not use social media on a regular basis said that they have a stronger urge to stay away from the internet. Even though there are many negatives to social media there are some positives as well. NickMcGillivray who is affiliated with the website, TurboFuture wrote the article, “What Are the Effects of Social Media on Youth.” In his article, he states, “There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs” (McGillivray). In this statement, he makes it clear, that social media has both positives and negatives. One positive of social media that impacts teenager’s lives would be, how they are able to communicate with their teachers and other classmates at any time. This makes it easier for
