Pit and mounds are persistent micro-topographical features formed after a disturbance event occurs or uproots trees. The uprooted tree falls forms a pit in the forest floor. After a period of time,  roots decay, the associated soil matrix falls back to the ground, creating a corresponding mound.

Pit and mounds are found on a fine spatial scale, that result of one tree felling. It can also be caused by other factors. Pit and mounds have been analyzed on both on a small scale and larger scale forest systems.
