Equations and Inequations
Equations and inequalities describe the relationship between two mathematical expressions.
Linear Functions
A linear function can just be a constant, or it can be the constant multiplied with the variable like x or y. If the variables are of the form, x2, x1/2 or y2 it is not linear. The exponent over the variables should always be 1.
A man is in a boat 2 miles from the nearest point on the coast. He is to go to point Q, located 3 miles down the coast and 1 mile inland (see figure). He can row at a rate of 2 miles per hour and walk at 4 miles per hour. Toward what point on the coast should he row in order to reach point Q in the least time? (Round your answer to two decimal places.)
