A factory worker named Nazrul of ‘Company Levon’ worked on the production line when his glove captures and his arm was drawn into an in-feed conveyor belt. Although the workers managed to pull him free, he suffered two broken bones in his right arm and a dislocated wrist. The employee missed eight weeks of work after the accident, which took place on March 10, 2018. An investigation by the Human Resources Executive of the company revealed that the company had removed a part of the line, thus leaving a gap in the side of the conveyor belt. The worker put his hand inside the hole to recover some trapped lids. It was then when his glove became entangled, and his arm was drawn into a dangerous moving part of the machine. The officer said that it was inadequately guarded. HE also said: “I am pleased that the worker has made a full recovery, but many other employees sustain permanent disability or impairment because machine safety is being neglected.” “Unguarded or poorly guarded machinery is the cause of many injuries in workplaces across the country. Employees should not be exposed to risks through their work. The company failed to make sure that the dangerous moving parts of the in-feed conveyor were not accessible by the workforce on the production line.” He added. This failure could have been addressed at a minimal cost. “They also failed to re-assess the hazard to workers after the modification they made to the production line. Even temporary changes to machinery should be fully considered to ensure that additional risks are identified and addressed.” The worker did not sue the company for any compensation but the company borne all the medical expenses for the employee for his prompt recovery. The company did not deduct any amount from his wages during the victim’s absence. The worker was also paid an amount of BDT 10,000 on his rejoining the organization. However, an executive of “Company Levon” also said: “We acknowledge that the machine guard had been temporarily removed for maintenance purposes and all the staffs had been strongly warned to avoid the area.” The management of “Company Levon” had been trying to maintain an environment within the organization where the workers felt comfortable to work. The company knew the importance of holding efficient and experienced workers and employees, who contributed in mostly earning profits. To retain staffs and employees, this company provided different benefits and services to the workers. They provided welfare measures to the workers, at a nominal cost, which included health facilities, washing facilities, canteen and drinking water. The health measures were intended to enhance the comfort level of workers, thus increasing their productivity. The firm provided additional benefits to employees apart from the salary like soft loans to employees, housing, and transportation. The employer contributed to the employee’s provident fund. There are some other retirement benefits available for workers and staff as well. To ensure the safety in the workplace, the company maintained and guarded its dangerous machinery properly. Even after ensuring all these facilities the company had to deal with such accidents, which were unfortunate. However, “Company Levon” was very proud of its overall safety record and over the past five years, only few reportable accidents happened on the production site. Questions to be answered: Identify the problem areas of “Company Levon”. What kind of safety measures should be taken by “Company Levon” to avoid the work injuries? Are the benefits and services provided to the employees and workers of “Company Levon” worthy enough to motivate them? What advice would you give to “Company Levon” to make them more aware and sensitive towards employee’s benefits? Explain your opinion with justification.
