You might think drug laws and regulations are boring topics but they are critical for consumer safety and your safe practice as a health care professional. These regulations are often taken for granted but they have saved countless of lives over the years. Take the Tylenol poisoning that occurred in Chicago in 1982. Someone opened up Tylenol pill containers and laced the pills with cyanide which killed several people. This led to tamper-proof medication laws preventing this tragedy from happening again. You may be familiar with hard-open safety caps on medications. Think of all the children who have saved by this one,simple change. In the past, con artist called “snake oil salesmen” peddled miracle cures for what ailed you. Even if the substance worked, there were no guarantees that the substance wasn’t contaminated with poison. Today, we have federal agency that regulates the manufacturing of all the drugs to ensure safety and purity. These are just some examples of drug laws. Can you state two more examples for consumers or for you when you enter your medical profession?
