Define Arithmetic.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Arithmetic is one of the oldest and elementary parts of mathematics. It is derived from the Greek word "arithmos", which means number. It deals with the study of numbers involving basic operations like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.

Arithmetic is the alternated name given to the number series. It deals with different types of numbers like odd numbers, whole numbers, even numbers etcetera.

Step 2

Arithmetic operations: -

  • Addition(+): -
    • It involves the process of taking two or more numbers and combining them together.
    • The identity element of Addition is 0, which means adding 0 to any number gives the same number as a result.
    • Example:  6 + 3 = 9
  • Subtraction(-): -
    • It is the opposite of Addition. It involves finding the difference between two values.
    • After subtraction, the numerical value of the number gets reduced.
    • Example:   6 - 3 =3
  • Multiplication(×): -
    • It involves finding product of two or more numbers. When the two values are multiplied, the net values gets increased.
    • The product of two numbers x and y is expressed as x*y
    • In the software world, multiply is expressed as a x*y  (* is the asterisk symbol).
    • Example:   6 * 3 = 18
  • Division(÷): -
    • It calculates the quotient of two numbers, the dividend is divided by divisor.
    • The quotient is 0 if the dividend is less than the divisor. The number left behind after dividing the dividend by divisor is termed as remainder.
    • It divides the larger group into sub-groups.
    • Example:   6 ÷ 2 = 3
