The reasons for the downfall of the Biblical King of Israel, King Saul were mainly the results of problems stemming out of his own character. King Saul had three fundamental flaws- he was extremely proud, suffered from uncontrolled jealously and was fearful of his own subjects. Because of these flaws, even God punished him by sending an evil spirit to haunt him.
Saul started as a man of humility, but eventually in the course of his reign, became extremely proud. His pride had reached to an extent where he had to pretend to be spiritual rather than actually being so.
He was also a good and a brave person to begin with and had scored several victories for Israel. Yet, eventually, he began to fear his own people and allowed himself to be swayed by their voices and command, rather than the voice and wisdom of God.
