Question

Describe the functions of the four photoreceptor
proteins in human vision.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Photoreceptor proteins are the light sensitive proteins which are involved in the process of sensing and response to light.

Step 2

Rods and cones are the photoreceptor cells found in the human retina. Rods are extremely sensitive and cone need significantly brighter light. At low light condition, vision is contributed by the rod cells.

Rhodopsin is also called as visual purple, is a light sensitive receptor protein. This is involved in the process of visual phototransduction. It is highly sensitive to light. Thus it enables vision in the condition of low light. It is present in the rods of the eye and this allow the rods to absorb the photons and recognise light. This protein is essential for vision that too in dim light.
