Question

Describe the ideal process for an adiabatic compressor.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The ideal process for an adiabatic compressor is a reversible process. Adiabatic is a condition in which work is done by not using the surrounding heat. As the temperature remains the same, the internal energy is equal to the heat given to the compressor. For such a component, reversible work is favorable as the irreversible process decreases the efficiency of the overall system. So, for zero wastage of heat reversible process is preferred. And the work done by the adiabatic compressor is known as isentropic work (no transfer of heat).

The expression for the efficiency of the adiabatic compressor is,

η=isentropic workactual work input

Here ƞ is the efficiency of the adiabatic compressor.
