Question

Describe the structure of the retina.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The visual system is comprised of the eyes which help in perceiving and processing visual detail. The eyes receive light from the surroundings and focuses it with the help of the lenses on the retina which converts the images into electrical impulses that are carried to the brain via the optic nerve. The eye is made up of several components which must work in unison to create a clear image. The white portion of the eye is called the sclera which helps in protecting the eyeball. The pupil is a spherical structure in the center of the eye that allows light to enter. The iris is the spherical structure surrounding the pupil which changes the dimensions of the pupil so that the right amount of light enters into the eye. The cornea is the structure that protects the iris and the pupil and is involved in the bending of the light or refracting the light entering into the eye. Behind the pupil, there is a lens that focuses the light on the retina. The inner layer of the back of the eye is made up of the retina which converts the visual images into electrical signals.
