Do membrane proteins move?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Introduction

Cell is the basic unit of life. All organisms be it single cellular or multicellular, prokaryote or eukaryotes are made up of cells. Cell is the basic unit which can work independently. Cell is enclosed by the membranous structure referred as Plasma membrane.

Plasma membrane is the basic structure which provides a proper shape to the cell and perform various functions such as transport, signalling, protection etc. It is selectively permeable membrane which allows only selective molecules to pass through.

Step 2

Plasma membrane in eukaryotes is usually bilayer structure which contains lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in the varied proportions. Lipid has a polar head and non-polar tail; They are arranged into a bilayer structure facing the head outside and tail inside the membrane. Lipids layer are incorporated by proteins at various locations. These proteins can be found on either of the membrane or can found crossing both the membrane such as transmembrane proteins. Carbohydrates usually found on the surface of the outer membrane towards non-cytosolic side.
