Expert Solution
Step 1: We have given with curve and we have to determine whether it is function or not.

So to find whether that relation represented by graph is function or not, we use vertical line test.

Vertical Line Test : Draw a vertical line anywhere on the graph, and if it never hits the graph more than once

then it function. (That means if your vertical line hits twice or more, it's not a function.)

So When you draw vertical line anywhere to given graph you can observe that it intersects given curve

only once. Therefore by vertical line test you can say given relation is function.

You can observe that in following figure,

Step 3

a) Now we have to find its domain and range.

The domain of function is set of inputs or the argument values for which the function is real and defined.

So our given function has no undefined points hence the domain of given function is all real numbers.

Interval Notation :  (-,)  that means -<x<

And the range is nothing but the set of all output points.

Thus the range of given function is  f(x)-4.

Interval notation :  [-4,)
