![Chapter Summary
Rizal's essay, “The Philippines, a Century Hence" was published in La Solidaridad
in four series from September 30, 1889 to January 31, 1890. In this essay, Rizal answered
the basic question of whether the Philippines will remain a Spanish colony or not and the
destiny of the Filipino nation a hundred years from his time. As his analysis, Rizal provided
a compelling situation that the Philippines would only remain a colony of Spain if the
Filipinos were granted reforms, particularly the freedom of the press and representation in
the Spanish Cortes. Otherwise, Rizal predicted the independence of the Philippines as
triggered by revolution. The advancement and ethical progress of the Philippines are
inevitable as decreed by fate, according to Rizal. The Philippines cannot remain in its
condition without requiring from the sovereign country (Spain) more liberty. As the adage
goes, "Mutatis mutandis" (For new men, a new social order).
In the introductory portion of the essay, Rizal inferred that the new era for the Filipinos
depicts the gradual loss of their ancient traditions, their recollections, their system of
writings, their songs, their customary laws and their poetry. He also stated that the Filipinos
will become ashamed of what was distinctively their own, in order to admire and praise what
is foreign and incomprehensible such that the Filipino nationalistic spirit will die.
In his essay, Rizal also recognized the contributions of Spain for the betterment of the
Philippine economy in the 19th century. However, despite this prosperity, Rizal condemned
the brutality of the Spaniards to the Filipinos.
