Napoleon was tasked with defending theNational Convention in Paris and was successful in pushing backthe royalists. With the trust of the new ruling body, the Directory,Napoleon was given command of military campaigns in Italy,Austria, the Netherlands, Egypt, Syria, and other places whereFrench forces fought against countries led by monarchs whothreatened the revolution.While commanding French troops, General Bonaparte gainedpopularity in France. To many of the French people he was thesuccessful leader who defeated armies threatening their countryand who enriched the French by bringing the riches of otherNapoleon sworn in as First Consul, by Auguste Couderregions home.While in Egypt, Napoleon learned that the Directory wasespecially weak and that European armies were once againthreatening France. Seeing an opportunity to assume morepower, he organized a coup d'état, took control of thegovernment and declared himself First Consul of France.Napoleon wrote a new constitution for France which gave himnearly unlimited control. The constitution was voted on by thepeople of France and passed 3 million in favor to 1,567 opposed.
