Question

Explain how legumes are different from other plants.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Plants are autotrophic organisms which can be characterised by their green leaves. The chlorophyll pigment present in the green leaves captures the sunlight which initiates the process of photosynthesis by which plants can synthesize their own food. These plants can be grouped together in the different taxon of a classification system based on the similarities and dissimilarities.
The plants which produce pods are known as legume plants and are kept under the family Leguminosae. There are about 18000 species of legume plants such as Albizzia, Acacia, Soyabean etc. which are kept under Leguminosae family. The pods are a rich source of proteins and vitamins and therefore pods of some species are consumed by humans such as beans, peas etc.
