Question

Explain taxonomic Family. If you were to choose what classification would you be in and why?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Taxonomy is the field of biology which involves the classification of living beings. A botanist named Carolus Linnaeus invented the system of binomial nomenclature in which he gave each type of organism a genus and species name. Taxonomic hierarchy was the classification system developed by him which consists of eight ranks or taxon : domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

Step 2

Taxonomic family is a group of organisms present in an order. It is more precise than order but less precise than genus. Organisms which belong to the same family are considered to be evolved from the same ancestors and share relatively common characteristics.

e.g. Order Carnivora consists of several families like Canidae(dogs),Felidae(cats) etc.
