Question
Explain the function of central chemoreceptors.
Expert Solution
Step 1
Chemoreceptors are responsible for sensing changes in their environment chemical composition. The central chemoreceptors and peripheral chemoreceptors regulate the respiratory system. The central chemoreceptors are present at the base of the brain in the respiratory center. Peripheral chemoreceptors detect drastic changes in the level of pO2. The central chemoreceptors regulate the respiratory system with a negative feedback mechanism. The increased level of pCO2 increases ventilation. The carbon dioxide is blown off and returns to its normal level. The ventilation decreases with decreased pCO2 that allows more CO2 retention and maintains its normal level.
