File Attributes
5. File attributes
(a) File name: file name is a very important file attribute When a file changes name, it seems to change its
identity (just like when you change your name)
The oldest file naming we may remember is the 8 +3 convention in DOS (in DOS, all file names can NOT be
bigger than 8 characters, special characters like spaces were not allowed etc.). So a file like C:\\Program
Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop can cause problems in DOS, and it has to be represented in different ways using strange
character like~ (tilde).
Elaborate on your understanding of file names or file naming in different operating systems (Windows, Mac,
Linux etc.). For example, some OS like NTFS may allow longer file name, allow space, and even allow non
English like characters such as Chinese file names. Is there a maximum length of file names (can you have a file
name of 1,000 characters long?)
(b) File creation date and modification date. File can be created and modified using different ways of naming
a date. For example, May 1, 2021, can be 5/1/2021 or 5/1/21 (or even May 1, 2021) in US, but it may be
1/5/2021 or 1/5/21 in Europe. (Excel date format shows this). Also, the day of week such as Saturday can
appear in the date (or may be not). Similarly time can be expressed differently (9:10 a.m. can be expressed
as 9:10 a.m., or 9:10 simply; 2:30 p.m. can be 2:30 p.m., or 14:30 etc.. Also, when your computer / device
goes to a different time zone when you travel, the creation date and modification date can be changed if
you change the clock date and time of your computer).
Elaborate this.
(c) File size. There can be questions on how a file's size is displayed differently in DOS and in Windows (or
in Unix etc.). Refer to Q1 of this report. Also, there may be a maximum for a file size depending on the
file system (so FAT-12, FAT-16 and FAT-32 limit the biggest file size, but later FAT or file allocation
table allows bigger file sizes).
Note that computers running Unicode or double bytes (such as Chinese Windows) may count the file size
differently because every Chinese character counts as 2 ASCII characters.
Elaborate this.
(d) Identify two more file attributes different from above and elaborate them.
