A solid-state drive (SSD) is a solid-state storage system that persistently stores data using integrated circuit assemblies, usually using flash memory, and acts as secondary storage in the computer storage hierarchy.

  • Although SSDs lack the physical spinning disks and movable read-write heads found in hard disk drives and floppy disks, it is often called a solid-state computer or a solid-state disk.
  • SSDs are typically more resistant to physical shock, run silently, and have faster access time and lower latency compared with electromechanical drives.

Purpose of Solid State Drives:

A new generation of storage devices used in computers is a solid-state drive (SSD). By using flash-based memory, which is significantly faster, SSDs replace traditional mechanical hard disks.

  • Older technologies for hard disk storage run slower, which often makes your computer run slower than it should.

Solid State Drive effects the future memory management:

SSDs use a different kind of memory, are not directly accessible to the processor of your computer, and are much slower than RAM.

1. However, they can make an even bigger difference in the performance of your computer compared to adding RAM.

2. In order to store data, SSDs use a special form of memory circuit called non-volatile RAM (NVRAM), so it remains in place even when the device is off.
