How hypnotherapy help people with dissociative amnesia?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Dissociative amnesia is a type of dissociative disorder, which includes a variety of symptoms. Memory, consciousness, awareness, identity, and/or perception are all disrupted or broken in people with dissociative disorders. Symptoms may occur if one or more of these functions are disturbed. These symptoms can wreak havoc on a person's overall functioning, including social and occupational activities, as well as interpersonal relationships. Dissociative amnesia occurs when a person blocks out particular information, typically related to a stressful or traumatic incident, leaving them unable to recall essential personal details.

Step 2

Hypnosis is occasionally used to help people with dissociative amnesia remember things they've forgotten. Although hypnosis can help people with dissociative amnesia feel less anxious, the memories they recall may be false. Hypnosis is frequently used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.
