Patients are allowed to run accounts but interest is charged on unpaid balances after 30 days. Certain patients (and their family members) may be covered by dental plans that pay for all or a part of specific services they require. The dentists maintain a list of the providers of these plans so that they may bill them for reimbursement. For taxation purposes, it is necessary to track the yearly expenses incurred by each patient at each office as well as the amount paid under any insurance plans. For serious cases, the dentists also maintain a list of specialists in various areas to whom they may refer patients. The referral process is done first by telephone and then formally via regular post."
