Identify/describe the four valves of the heart. Describe its functions.

Step 1

The heart:

It is blood pumping organ. It consists of four chambers: two upper chambers or atria and two lower chambers or ventricles. Blood passes across a valve before parting each heart chamber.

Step 2

The valves:

Valves are in fact flaps or leaflets. These avoid the back flow of blood. These flaps work as one-way inlets for the approaching blood into a ventricle as well as one-way outlets for the blood departuring a ventricle. Normal valves contain three flaps; excluding the mitral valve as it contain only two flaps.

Step 3

The four heart valves with their function are given below:

  1. Tricuspid valve:

This valve connects the right atrium with right ventricle. This valve divides the right atrium from the right ventricle. It prevents the back flow of blood from into the right atrium during the ventricle contraction.

  1. Pulmonary valve:

This valve connects the right ventricle with the pulmonary artery. This valve closes off the right ventricle. It opens to permit the pumping of blood from heart to the lungs across the pulmonary artery where it will obtain oxygen.
