Requirement for PMO

Large software development projects especially where the product is going to be used by a large organization or those which are going to be sold as products / platforms require expertise from multiple functional disciplines such as human resources, operations and multiple business domain areas such as healthcare, financial, logistics, etc. The domain experts bring to the table their domain knowledge which is used for building software modules meant for automating the corresponding business processes. Also experts are required in various software development methodologies, platforms and programming languages as it is possible that the software would need to work on multiple platforms. In the case of such complexity a PMO would be essential for coordination, support and visibility.

Supportive PMO generally provides support in the form of on-demand expertise, templates, best practices, access to information and expertise on other projects, and the like. This suits projects which are done successfully in a loosely controlled manner and where additional control is deemed unnecessary. For cutting edge projects where the technology is new and untested, lot of experiments and cross flow of ideas and information is required.
