Map Distortion. A map is a 2-dimensional “ flat" representation of a states and roads that are on the surface of a sphere. Straight-line distances on a map are approximations to circular arcs on the sphere (i.e. the earth's surface). In going from arcs to lines, the linear distance ends up being shorter than the actual distance along the arc.
