A Cell is surrounded by a membrane called cell membrane which is made up of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. The general structure of a cell membrane is a lipid bilayer with different proteins and carbohydrates and other molecules like cholesterol anchored or embedded in it.

A cell membrane is semi-permeable and allows only small and non-polar (such as O2, CO2, urea, water) molecules to diffuse through it. Transport of large, charged and polar molecules require some channel proteins or carrier proteins.
