You are currently employed at One Dental, a group of private practice dental clinics. One Dental has over
100 locations in Australia, with multiple dental clinics in each state.
One Dental is currently experiencing some issues with their staff and as a result, the HR Manager from One
Dental's head office has asked that you work with a number of other senior team members in your state to
solve them. The HR Manager has identified four inter-related problems that clinics in your state have been
experiencing:
Problem 1: Filling shifts
To cater for clients who work full-time, One Dental clinics open at 7am and close at 6pm. This means that
the clinics need to be staffed during these hours. Typically, dental nurses need to arrive 1.5 hours before the
first client to set up, and stay 1.5 hours after the last client to pack up.
Thus, there are 2 shifts at One Dental for nurses: 5:30am-2:30pm, and 10:30am - 7:30pm.
In winter, however, it is particularly difficult to get nurses to take the morning shift. Not only is it dark and
cold at the time they are required to start work, but the nurses (who are mostly female) have expressed
their concerns about trying to get early morning public transport.
Some nurses have also stated that cultural barriers prevent them from coming to work early at any time of
year. In their culture, they are prevented from working at times when their families (children and
dependant relatives) need to be fed, monitored or supervised.

Problem 2: Quality recruitment
One Dental has difficulty sourcing skilled dental nurses.
Nationally, there is a shortage of qualified dental nurses. To try and solve this problem and keep costs down,
One Dental employs many staff on nursing traineeships. However, nurses on traineeships require a lot of
hands-on training from dentists, which takes up valuable time. Also, mistakes made by trainee nurses has
contributed to a decrease in client satisfaction.
Problem 3: Health and safety risks
Due to the high proportion of dental nurses on traineeships, there has been concerns regarding health and
safety.
Dentists and practice managers are often far too busy to train new nurses on health and safety, and as a
result, there has been an increase in incidents and injuries
Problem 4: Staff morale
All of the above problems have contributed to low staff morale. Many of the nurses feel they are not
receiving proper training throughout their traineeship, and are frustrated because they feel they are being
forced to work shifts they have expressed their concerns about in addition to this, the increased incidence
of WHS issues has led staff to lose respect for senior staff and dentists they work with, and consider looking
for work elsewhere
