Please discuss ways in which a mental status exam can be helpful in the diagnosing of anxiety and/or mood disorders specifically.
The mental state exam (MSE) is a process of examining the mental state and behavior of a person as a part of clinical assessment. It includes the observations made by the clinician about the patient and the descriptions given by the patient on various domains of analysis. It is generally useful for determining the extent of neurological and psychological issues in a patient, including anxiety or mood disorders and helps in understanding the mental state of the patient at a given point of time. This is particularly useful in checking the response of a treatment given to the patient and observing the changes in mental state at regular intervals. The MSE is conducted across a wide range of domains including - appearance, attitude, speech, mood, behavior, cognition, judgement and so on.
