Urine is quite interesting to me, since it’s such a quality indicator of our health. I learned about some new testing that I hadn’t heard of before this week.   I’m familiar with blood urea nitrogen (BUN) tests, which test the levels of urea in the blood, thus testing the function of the kidneys. I’m also familiar with the common urine test, as I had quite a few during my pregnancy! I also was aware that one could have a cystoscopy, which is a visual exploration of the urethra and the bladder via an endoscope.   I didn’t know about is the creatinine clearance test, which tests the functioning of the glomeruli in filtering out creatinine. I was also unfamiliar with the radiologic tests involving the urinary system. The kidneys-uterus-bladder (KUB) test finds abnormalities via x-ray. An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) uses dye injected into the patients bloodstream to see abnormalities via x-ray. A cystogram is similar to an IVP, but in a cystogram the dye is injected directly into the bladder using a catheter. I was also interested to hear about the different types of catheters- as strange as that sounds. I had no idea there was more than one kind. I was so scared to get one when I got my epidural when I had my daughter because I thought it would hurt, but it didn’t. I was completely unaware of a suprapubic catheter. I also didn’t know that about an in-and-out catheter, but now that I think about it, it seems obvious that there would be situations that would require that. I also learned quite a bit more than I had previously known about dialysis. I thought dialysis was just hemodialysis and thought one had to go to a dialysis center to receive it. The process of undergoing dialysis at home via hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis was new to me."

"This week I reviewed quite a bit about what I’ve previously learned about the kidneys and urine production.

An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) uses dye injected into the patients bloodstream to see abnormalities via x-ray.
