PURPOSE:
To use graphing, and the equation of a line to determine "physical" quantities
such as the mass of a single nut and the mass of a single bolt.
BACKGROUND:
You have been appointed chief bolt inspector at your plant. You arrive on the job
and are given the task of determining the mass of one hex head bolt and a single
nut. Unfortunately you can't just mass the bolt or nut because all the pieces you
find have nuts attached which were quite snuggly tightened down for regulatory
reasons. What's worse, there aren't any loose nuts around to mass, either.
APPARATUS
Bolt
Nuts
Materials:
Set of bolts with nuts attached and secured.
1 triple beam balance or digital scale
PROCEDURE:
1. You are given a set of bolts with different numbers of nuts attached.
2. Find the mass of each assembly on the balance. Record the results in the table
below. Please measure to1/ 100th of a gram (two decimal place
Data:
Number of nuts
Mass of Nuts & Bolt

8.50
9.45
10.75

Results: Make a graph, on graph paper or
Data studio or Excel. The title is "Mass of
Nuts and Bolt" vs. # of Nuts".
• Determine the independent and
dependent variable.
• The "x"- and "y"-axes do not have to have
the same scale.
• Unless you have a very good reason,
include the origin on all graphs. Do not
make a break in either axis.
Label the axis
Include best fit line or curve
Include the equation of the line directly
on the graph
• Pay attention to the UNITS for the slope
and the y-intercept. If you use a program
to determine your line, it will not do that
for you.
