This was the start of a most significant feature of twentieth century media, the rise of one-way communication. Broadcasting initially involved only the electronic transmission of radio signals. In the US, two inventors working independently claim to have developed a system for transforming a visual image into an electronic signal in 1927, Vladimir Zworykin and Philo T. Farnsworth. At about the same time in Europe, the works of John Logie Baird of Scotland and Sir Isaac Shoenberg of Britain led to the development of the television-broadcast system. Commercial television in the US began in 1939 with the coverage of Franklin Roosevelt opening the World Fair in New York. In Britain, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) broadcast the procession of the coronation of King George from Hyde Park. Germany claims to have operated the world's first regular television service during the time of Adolph Hitler. Propaganda broadcasts were transmitted to specially equipped theaters.
