Relating to soil deposits, provide a definition of subsurface effective stress and total stress, and explain the relationship between the two.
Relating to soil deposits, provide a definition of subsurface effective stress and total stress, and explain the relationship between the two.
Total stress at any point is defined as the stress which is caused due to self weight of the soil or due to any applied overburden pressure.
The total stress is given by,
Effective stress at any point is defined as the stress which is transferred by grain to grain in the soil particles due to which particles come close to each other and as a result void ratio of soil is decreased.
Effective stress cannot be directly measured because for this stress of each particle is to be determined and which is not practically possible. So it is calculated with the help of total stress and pore water pressure.
