The British ocean liner Lusitania, which sank in a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, indirectly contributed to the entry of the United States into World War I.
Lusitania, owned by Cunard Line, was built to compete with the highly profitable Atlantic passenger trade. Construction began in 1904 and after completion of the hull and main structure, Lusitania opened on June 7, 1906. The liner was completed the following year, at which time it was the largest ship in the world at about 787 feet in length. . (240 m) length and weight approximately 31,550 tons; The following year it was overtaken by its ally Mauritania. Although spectacular, Lusitania is more famous for its speed. On September 7, 1907, the ship made its maiden voyage from Liverpool, England to New York City. The following month it won the Blue Ribbon for the fastest Atlantic crossing, averaging 24 knots. Mauritania then claims the Blue Ribbon and the two ships regularly fought for honor.
