adult; why this number differs in newborns
and children; and why the number varies
among adults

Expert Solution
Step 1: Background

The bones the basis of the skeletal system, that provides structure to the human form. Bones perform both homeostatic and mechanical functions. These protect several internal organs such as the brain (by the skull), heart, and lungs (rib cage). The bones facilitate load-bearing, and locomotion and is involved in calcium homeostasis in the human body.

Bones are not made up of a single material but are composite structures with different types of cells surrounded by mineral crystals, extracellular matrix (primarily type 1 collagen), and lipids. However, the exact composition of bones varies with age, function, type, and location.

Step 2: Explanation

New bone tissue can only be formed from existing cartilage or bone tissue. During embryological development, bones are formed from cartilaginous tissue via endochondral ossification. Such cartilages exist at both the proximal as well as distal ends of the bones and help in bone lengthening with age. Bone cells are called chondrocytes. These proliferate, form a matrix that undergoes calcification and mineralization with time and thereby extends the existing bone structure. These are then intertwined with blood vessels. These sites of bone growth are called growth plates. Infants and children have several growth plates but these mostly close with the end of puberty.
