Their illnesses are the same-they always cough, have a fever and have diarrhea. Their bellies are as big as a drum. There are worms that come out when they have a bowel movement which Lucy believes is normal only because she knows that the worms help digest food in the stomach. Antonio and Rosario also did not have a vaccine because Lucy was scared when Jocelyn and Marites had a slight fever when they got vaccinated. Jaime also scolds her if the child has a fever after the vaccination. Another reason is the uncertainty of free vaccinations in their barangay health centers due to the lack of vaccines and the lack of midwives and health workers in the center. The youngest of them all is Rosario. She was the thinnest, palest and always had diarrhea. One day, Rosario fell ill with measles. Lucy took her to the nearest health center which is also their barangay health center. The consultant is free, but the barangay Health center does not provide free medicine. The nurse said the budget for that person for medicines at the center had been exhausted. The nurse also said that the Sangguniang Bayan did not approve the Municipal Health Officer's request for an additional budget for medicines this year. He said this is because the town councilors suspect that the additional funds will only go to the Mayor and Municipal Health Officer. Lucy just bought the three drugs prescribed for Rosario –Loviscol syrup (for cough) / 60ml PhP109.00, Ercefuryl suspension (for diarrhea) 220mg per 5ml / 60ml Php243.00 and Ceporex (an antibiotic) 250mg per 5ml / 30ml PhP150.00. She was told that the very and top brands that were prescribed should be bought because they were for Rosario's own illness. When they ran out of a bottle of three medicines, they could no longer buy because they had no money. Rosario did not recover completely. Her diarrhea continued until it dried up. Lucy took Rosario again to the health center, but they were transferred to a private hospital as it was not clear to Lucy why they could not admit Rosario at the barangay health center. The hospital demanded a deposit of PhP1,200.00. Fortunately, they owe PhP 1,500 to their Barangay Captain who is making “5 -6”. Because Rosario was so pale, a unit of blood had to be transfused into her. Jaime took a unit of blood for it. When they stayed at the hospital for one night, their cost reached PhP4,150 and they decided to just release Rosario even though they didn't want to release her before she was well because their cost to the hospital was like a drop of a taxi meter. Everything is charged to them - cotton, alcohol, gauze, tape and more. After a terrific plea the patient was also allowed to come out. They were asked to sign that they and their family were forcing their way out of the hospital even against the doctor's order. They were advised to return only if they had money or went to the government hospital. After a week of constant diarrhea and fever, Rosario became weak, dehydrated and eventually died. 1. Identify at least five (5) variables that contribute to the health status of Rosario. Provide cues or evidence from the case. Are these variables internal or external? Put a check. Question

STORY:
The village of Tanyong is next to the estuary of the river Malabon. It covers an area of five
hectares where 1,850 families or 12,400 people live. To reach the houses, people walk on
bridges that are not strong enough. So many people get into accidents and many children fall
into dirty and very black water. The water under the house is a garbage dump and a toilet as
well. In the survey conducted, only 10% have their own toilet and 90% use a "wrapping system"
of their feces and throw to disposal or go straight to the toilet. About 10% have their own water
and 90% fetch water from the well. There are two public wells and water is purchased. A
container with only 5 gallons costs PhP15.00 - PhP30.00 depending on the distance from home.
Those who live here have no title to the land they live on. The rent for a pig's-like house is
PHP500 - Php1,000 per month. The good ones are Php1,500-PHP2,000 per month. Jaime, 24
years old, lives here in Tanyong village. His wife is Lucy, 27 years old.
Their children are Jocelyn, 5 years old; Marites, 4 years old; Antonio, 2 years old; and Rosario, 1
year and 4 months. Jaime is one of the 70% who came from the province and went to Manila to
have a good life. His family is from Pangasinan. His father was a small farmer. But their harvest
was not enough for their family, so they left for Manila. Today, Jaime is a laborer at a
construction site in Quezon City. His income is Php165.00 a day. It was not enough for their
family. They save on all costs, but they are always deeply in debt. If Lucy is shopping, she can
enjoy the Php50.00 dish at three meal course. Sometimes he could no longer even have a bite
of the certain meal prepared.
Once, when Lucy was pregnant with Rosario and she really wanted to eat nutritious and
delicious food, she couldn't do it, she could only feed their three children at that time. She just
puts up with it and thinks that only God will take care of him. The bishop said in the sermon.
"Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the kingdom of God!". Lucy is a native of Visayas
